Default Nelson Mandela R.I.P.

The word great gets tossed around casually some times - not with regard to this man

When we're seemingly so deprived of icons of his kind, it's especially sad to see news of his passing.

R.I.P., Mister Mandela. Hopefully we will see more leaders like you in the near future.

Time to reflect on and celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela. A man that led by example and took on the daunting task of leading his people, at great risk to himself, to equality and freedom from within his own country. His mark will be everlasting, as will his influence on others to fight for what they believe in, no matter the cost.

I was visiting DC, when he was released, and visited the White House.

All traffic stopped, and a mile long police escort came through the city. I remember the sound of the sirens, mixed with whistles & cheers from people on the street.

It was memorable, to say the least.

The world lost a good one. We need more people like him in the world today. Such strength, courage, and determination... Truly a loss the world over. One of the greatest human beings that's ever lived, a man who had the vision to see that something so simple as sports could unite a whole country and help to end Apartheid.

He wasn't perfect. This excerpt pretty much sums it up:

The apartheid regime was a crime against humanity; as illogical as it was cruel. It is tempting, therefore, to simplify the subject by declaring that all who opposed it were wholly and unswervingly good. It’s important to remember, however, that Mandela has been the first to hold his hands up to his shortcomings and mistakes. In books and speeches, he goes to great length to admit his errors. The real tragedy is that too many in the West can’t bring themselves to see what the great man himself has said all along; that he’s just as flawed as the rest of us, and should not be put on a pedestal.

The man was in prison for 27 years... I think he proved to the world that he learned the errors of his ways prior to being imprisoned. He ended an Apartheid regime and united a nation, not too many people can claim they've done something like that.
