It’s important to remember, however, that Mandela has been the first to hold his hands up to his shortcomings and mistakes. In books and speeches, he goes to great length to admit his errors. The real tragedy is that too many in the West can’t bring themselves to see what the great man himself has said all along; that he’s just as flawed as the rest of us, and should not be put on a pedestal.

The man was in prison for 27 years... I think he proved to the world that he learned the errors of his ways prior to being imprisoned. He ended an Apartheid regime and united a nation, not too many people can claim they've done something like that.
We have politicians here that have done just as bad (Iraq War, etc...). But have not done as good (ended Apartheid, avoided a civil war, united his country). It basically took a civilian reverend (Dr Martin Luther King Jr) to usher in the level of unity that this country does have among it's nationalities, politicians later came into the fray. Even the great American hero John F. Kennedy had to be "pushed" to publicly support civil rights. Here, it's the same old agenda among our politicians day in and day out: do nothing congress, Corporate owned representatives, argue "your sides" point of view no matter if it's wrong or right, do what get's you votes and nothing else. Smh. RIP Mandela.
