Default Dick LeBeau wants to return in 2014

Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau wants to return in 2014

By Neal Coolong on Dec 13 2013

The Steelers have stuck to a general message over the years; if Dick LeBeau wants to continue coaching, he will continue on as the Steelers defensive coordinator.

It's sadly becoming a trend. The Steelers start sliding toward the finish line, the postseason less and less likely, and the "will Dick LeBeau return next year?" stories begin appearing.

For the record, and according to comments LeBeau made to Alan Robinson of the Tribune-Review, he wants to come back in 2014.

LeBeau's contract status isn't known, writes Robinson, but the long-accepted attitude has been LeBeau will continue to coach as long as he wants to be in Pittsburgh.

Larry Foote even joked he'll coach until "they carry him out in a box."

If the Steelers have their leader, then collectively, other changes need to be made, both for salary cap reasons as well as deteriorating talent. Tough decisions stare the Steelers' brass square in the face this offseason, and a few surprises may be in store as well.

As Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said after last season, the players departing are members of an 8-8 team. Odds are excellent it will be worse than 8-8.

It is young, though, despite popular opinion. Rookies Jarvis Jones, Vince Williams and Shamarko Thomas all saw extensive time this season. It's rare for one defensive rookie to play a lot, but three of them, and two starters, is unheard of. They also didn't get the kind of season expected from Cortez Allen, another young player who was supposed to step into the spotlight and emerge as one of the best players on the team.

Maybe it needs another year. Maybe, in 2014, the team won't give up a shocking 11 plays of 50 yards or more (making up approximately 20 percent of all the yards they've given up this year).

What's certain, judging by past precedent, if LeBeau wants to be back, he will be back.

Well there better be more than some cosmetic changes. No way in hell will I be happy if this defense isn't gutted from the back to the front ie Ike, Troy, Clark, Ziggy and Woodley.

That means his boy Ike will be the #1 shut down CB on the team, guarding the #2 and #3 wrs'.

I'm not opposed to this, but perhaps they can watch the game tapes and see that playing 10 yards off the ball on 3rd and 3 is not playing defense.

I was actually hoping Butler would get his shot. The defense could use some new ideas and maybe simplifying the defense a little bit so our younger players can come in and contribute right away (or quicker than 4 years like worilds/heyward)

In all seriousness, I think it's time that LeBeau got a cushy front office position and Butler or whomever (c'mon Lovie Smith!) got the reigns of our defense.

I have no problem keeping LeBeau on as our DC - he just needs more talent to work with - and better work from our training staff to keep people healthy. Plus, gotta do something with people like Ike making #1 CB money, but performing like a #2 CB on our team. LeBeau isn't the one out there dropping INT's like Ike is - heck, LeBeau probably still has better hands than Ike and he hasn't played the position in what 30 years?

Seriously, if Woodley were living up to his contract, Ike was the man he was 3 or so years ago, Clark was even last year's version, Heyward would have started the year at DE instead of Ziggy, Foote would not have been injured, Cortez Allen playing this year like he finished last year - our D could have been an entirely different machine than we put out there - How are any of those things the fault of LeBeau? (OK, except the Heyward starting over Hood thing)

I would be OK with starting to "groom" someone to take over for him eventually, if the FO thinks his eventual replacement is in-house, lets start involving him more in the D play calling? When LeBeau eventually does leave, nice to have someone groomed and ready to go - who already has the respect.

And that's the way the Rooney's likely view it.

I don't think they'll nudge him out a bit.

But, we could definitely use a few adjustments such as.......not playing the corners 10 yds. of the WR on 3rd and 5 or in the red zone.

I don't think this has been mentioned before.

I love DL, but if he's coming back, something really has to change. Last few years we've been making some of the most mediocre, average QB's look like All Star, first ballad HOF'ers. Those 10 yard cushings on 3rd and short just isn't cutting it anymore. Some of the Elite QB's in this league look forward to playing against us here lately! Something's gotta give.
