Default Andy Reid Press Conference (about KC resting players)

Q: What are the pros and cons to resting guys in a game like this?

REID: ďWell, if you look at the history of it, itís about a 50/50 shot, over the last three or four years of people that have done it. I think itís what you feel most comfortable with as a coach. The obvious benefit is that you rest your guys and then you kind of get them back feeling a little bit fresher than they are at the end of the season; you take the risk of the timing part of it. Sometimes thatís there, sometimes thatís not. But, those are the things that you have to evaluate.Ē

Q: Where is this team in terms of that right now?

REID: ďWell, thatís what Iím going through and looking at. Iím not going to say anything right now; Iíd like to address the team, obviously, before I address the media.Ē

Q: In 2001, 2004, 2006 and 2010 you did rest your teams.

REID: ďIíve done it a couple of different ways. But yeah, that was one of the things.Ē

Q: Do you see similarities in the players here like you did in Philly as far as resting them?

REID: ďListen, Iíve got to go backóI do appreciate you doing your homework there. One thing I did then that Iím going to do now is I took the time that I have to evaluate it and make sure that I do what I think is right in the situation. Thereís a bit of a gut feeling youíre going off of and Iíll go off of that.Ē

Q: What about the integrity of the game? Is that something you look at?

REID: ďI think the way the NFL sits right now, and youíve seen that with our football team and I think you saw that with the depth of the Colts and the players theyíve played over time, thatís one of the better football teams in the league. Theyíve had to put their second group in and thereís obviously some rich talent there. One, that wonít, I think, affect the integrity of the game or hasnít affected the integrity of the game and still kept the game at a very high level. I donít think either way you go with it, youíre going to hurt that part of it. It surely wouldnít be with the people that we have and I donít think the other teams.Ē

Q: Will the way your team played yesterday factor into who will play against San Diego?

REID: ďIíll try to look at everything. I always try to look at everything and evaluate it and come up with what I think is right for this team.Ē

Q: How important would it be for Branden Albert and Justin Houston to get in on Sunday to knock a little rust off?

REID: ďIíll look at that too. Again, Iíll take that into consideration and look at it as I go through the process here.Ē

Q: If you decide to rest some guys, are there any particular young guys youíd like to get a look at?

REID: ďI havenít gotten that far yet. Iím still going through everything. So, thatís not where Iím at, right now.Ē

The Karma Gods will not be happy.

Just ask the Colts... who rested everybody, every year... and were subsequently "one & done" ten times.

Fuck.

I can't believe that this is happening. I'm going to get an entourage, my four brothers, a shooter, a fighter, and some other guys... and head to Andy Reid's house to deliver some max payne. One word: fear. It'll be a big hit... a perfect storm: all pain, no gain for Reid.

Uh... boogie nights.

Yes, the 2009 Colts had a chance to go undefeated, but at 14-0 started resting people vs the Jets, as I recall. Since then the Colts
- failed to win the Super Bowl despite the 14-0 start
- lost in the first round of the playoffs in 2010
- went 2-14 and lost Manning in 2011
- Lucked into a playoff spot but lost in the first round in 2012

So no playoff wins after 2009, interesting. The football gods are obviously not pleased.

If Andy Reid rests his players I believe he will be one and done, another thing that I found very unimpressive, he doesn't know his own personnel. Seems to me that there may be a communication problem with his Assistant Coaches, if he had say a Peyton Manning at the QB position or players were injured I would say go ahead and rest some of your starters. We all know that he doesn't and with having to go on the road for their first playoff game I would want momentum on my side, as well as knocking a division rival from the playoffs, JMO!!!!

Kiss of death for ol' Andy.

Coaches, as a rule, tend to be control freaks who fancy themselves as Masters of the Universe to begin with and when one of them gets it in his head that he can extend his reach to affecting the fortunes of other teams it's like crack to their psyche.

I think resting players is like a golfer standing on the 18th tee of a championship thinking to himself that he could afford to bogey this hole and STILL win -- after which he then proceeds to rinse his next two tee shots and is last seen slinking off to the parking lot talking to himself.

Ultimately, it boils down to what WE did (or in this case didn't do) and it's our fault for being in such a position as to have to be concerned about such things.

There's nothing we can do about it and if it ends up costing us a shot at the playoffs, I'd chalk it up as motivation for next year.
