Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat transcript: 1.8.14

PeteFromPeters: Gerry, I know it's foolhardy to compare potential draft picks this early, but...Why the outrageous love for A&M's Mike Evans? He's only 2 inches taller than PSU's Allen Robinson, and about 1/10 as athletic. I'm not sure either is a first rounder, but in my opinion, Robinosn is superiur. Any thoughts? I ask because I'd like to see Pgh take a WR in Rd 1.

Gerry Dulac: Well, I think you pointed up the main reason -- Mike Evans is 2 inches taller. Look, I Ilike Allen Robinson too, he's very athletic with great body control and has good size. But if the Steelers can get a 6-foot-5, 225-pound wide receiver who is a former basketball player, then that's what I'm taking.

I've stated on many instances I think the Steelers need to take a tall receiver in the first round. Especially when they have the 15th pick.

As I've said numerous times before, I don't watch much college football, so most of the information I get is from watching highlight reels, getting rundowns of the games on TV, and from reading bout the games.

But from what I've heard about Mike Evans- especially that he's great at getting open for his improvisational QB, and that he has that "catch anything in his radius" ability- Mike is my #1 choice. The guy will be a starter day 1, and with his size, he will be a much needed addition with this offense. Our redzone efficiency has done little short of pissing me off every time the Steelers get there, and we need a huge body like his.

Can you imagine the offense, especially after how we finished this year?

-Big Ben- Need I say more?
-Antonio Brown- Very likely our next Hines Ward if he keeps his game up, and all signs point to the notion that he will.
-Le'Veon Bell- Has the size, tools, and ability in the passing game to be the front man for the next generation of the best RBs. He could be devastating if he builds on last year's progression.
-Heath Miller- Easily the most underrated and under-appreciated TE in the league.
-Jerricho Cotchery- Arguably one of the top slot receivers this past year, yet also most under-appreciated at his position. He always seems to appear when the Steelers needed him to (well, once the offense got going).

And, add to all that:

-Mike Evans- An Andre Johnson-esque receiver who is bigger than half of our lineman and is big enough to lay out a linebacker if he gets a good start. His highlight reels show him making crazy catches with corners draped over him like a freakin' blanket. The greatest part is, he'll surely add a bit of muscle with the Steelers' strength program, giving him even more potential to be a weapon early in his career.

Add this to our very promising-looking OL building on what it had last year, with the potential return (or trade, thus adding more pieces to the team) of Maurkice Pouncey, this offense very well could pad the rebuilding of the defense.

Who needs corners when we can score OVER 9000 per game?

@Bane

I hear your point. I've mentioned (a year or so ago) that this offense could be special.

But, there are concerns with Mike Evans. He reminds me of Dez Brysnt. Great player, but a "me" guy. Most WRs are, but not to that extreme.

I hear you; I get your rationale. I just think that this defense is three players away from regaining its elite status: NT, CB, & FS.

The offense is very good. Bring the defense back (from decent to good), and you have yourselves a championship-caliber team.

If that's the case with Mike, then to hell with him. But would you really say we're solid at SS as well? Hell, even OLB is a question at this point. Despite that, I'm all for putting the offense over the top of we can get that chance.

If we can get Clinton-Dix, then I would be just as happy as if we got Evans (minus the personal issues). I would like to see the Steelers take a bigger dive into free agency this year as well.

If we don't get a big guy in round 1, we gotta get one in round 2 or 3 or grab one in FA. This team's offense has been awesome since it clicked, but that redzone inefficiency is going to lose us close games that we might otherwise dominate in. It sounds kind of like "1>2", but my non-GM brain tells me it'll be the quicker, more efficient solution.

I have also heard (I, like Bane am not up on College ball) this draft is deep with tall WR's. So I have to agree with Teegre on this. I think our first pick should be a CB, after that we need a S, NT and WR in whatever order works out best. In any event, those 4 should be our top 4 picks unless we can score a FA to fill in one of those roles.

SS: Shamarko will be a fine replacement for Troy. OLB: Jarvis showed flashes; I think he'll be good. Plus, a NT takes pressure off if the DEs, which helps the LBs.

I agree: the red-zone offense stalls. A tall WR (or a TE) would help with that. That said, WRs can be found in R3 (Terrell Owens, Mike Wallace, Brandon Marshall)... but, a truly dominant NT is hard to find. Ergo, NT & CB... followed by S, tall pass-catcher (WR or TE), and depth at OG.

Just find me the studs FO....we need help about everywhere but Qb, HB, kickers

Yeah Id like to put some teeth back into that Defense but if the grades arent there, then we dont need to be reaching

Way too early in the draft process to be ruling out loads of positions

I like Mike Evans because he goes up and fights for the football. Yes he is tall but he goes and gets it where ever Johnny Cleveland Clowns puts it. I wouldn't mind seeing NIx either but please God no Lewan or any LT for that matter. Let Beachum play! I might make a T-shirt! I might actually use his 1st name because who in the F**K names there kid Kelvin?? And my apologies to anyone on this board how did!

Wonder if Houston will give up there #1 pick for Big Ben he sucks anyways and I don't want anyone drafting a punter before we do... I'd rather play this safe
