Just to take a look at the top receivers in the NFL today:

Calvin Johnson - Round 1
Andre Johnson - Round 1
Larry Fitzgerald - Round 1
AJ Green - Round 1
Julio Jones - Round 1
Demaryius Thomas - Round 1
Dez Bryant - Round 1
Alshon Jeffery - Round 2
Desean Jackson - Round 2
Josh Gordon - Round 2 (Supplemental)
Brandon Marshall - Round 4
Antonio Brown - Round 6

Now, obviously not every first round wide receiver works out, this is true of any position. And sure, there are a lot of serviceable wide receivers in later rounds. But guys like Brandon Marshall and Antonio Brown are what people in the statistics business would call "outliers." The thing about late round wideouts is, you can often find serviceable, #2 or #3 slot guys and flash-in-the-pan guys who make it look like they were a steal, but in the end if you want a reliable, game-breaking, matchup nightmare, top-flight wide receiver, you need to invest an early pick. Even those guys I listed from Round 2 were first-round talents who dropped slightly due to health or character concerns. We've been giving Ben those #2 and #3 guys his whole career and always wonder why our offense struggles to score points. Maybe it's time to give him #1 guys. We've sure as hell exhausted every other option.

That's not to say I think WR is our number one need, but another true wideout across from Antonio Brown is certainly a need with Sanders probably leaving, Cotchery not under contract, Wheaton totally unproven, and nobody else on the roster. Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans are better WR prospects than the average "top wideout" options in a given draft class. To be honest, Louis Nix will probably be gone when we pick and one of those wideouts will likely be the BPA regardless, I don't think we should hesitate to pick one of them because "we can find late round receivers." Yeah, we can probably find someone to play the slot role and make some third down conversions and get like 800 yards and 3 TDs every year, but not someone who will change the dynamic of this offense, and this team needs CHANGE.

again...there are way, way, way too many defensive issues to worry about another receiver! especially when you have an obvious #1 in brown! if you already have a 1400 yd reciever on your team, i cant see a need for anything more than a guy that can pull in 800 - 900 yds a season...that is pretty good!!! brown...wheaton...cotchery...moye...justin brown...and a good mid rd draft pick like devin streeter or Jared Abbrederis !

Defense doesn't win championships anymore. Its the new NFL. We need to build a juggernaut offense. That'll do it, Lombardi and Walsh style. Landry and Noll style is dinosaur.

Haha.

Personally I don't care who the steelers take. I don't have first knowledge insight the way the organization does. I sure want early round draft picks to quit flaming out and sure hate seeing them taking 4 years to develop.

excellent point! I will be happy with whoever they pick. I have a certain way I'd like to see them go, it doesn't mean I'll be pissed and throw a tantrum if they don't go that way.

Nix is the Fix!

I say switch to the 4-3 defense

D-LINE

Hayward, Arnfelt
Woods, Hood
McLendon, Fangupo
Worilds, Keisel

LBs

Polumalu
Jones, Barrow dp
Timmons, Garvin

CBs

Taylor
Allen

S

Clinton-Dix dp
Shamarko

you got 3 safeties on the field.
now you can go into the draft to reload the defensive backfield get a WR and LB.

1st HaHa Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama

2nd Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State

4th Lamin Barrow ILB LSU

5th Stanley Jean-Baptiste CB Nebraska

Crazy right.
