Default Ed Bouchette: Which Steelers Won’t Be Back in 2014?

Ed Bouchette: Which Steelers Won’t Be Back in 2014?
December 30, 2013 8:47 AM

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) — 93-7 The Fan Steelers insider and Post-Gazette writer Ed Bouchette joined The Fan Morning Show on Monday to look back at the crazy ending to the NFL season, and to look ahead to the upcoming offseason.

Ed expects Mike Tomlin to simply shrug his shoulders at the poor officiating in the Chargers/Chiefs game during his press conference today, rather than call out the referees or the league.

He pointed out that it might not matter how the Steelers’ brass evaluates the team’s puzzling season, given that they made big changes two years ago even though the team finished 12-4.

He thinks that the Steelers should make an effort to re-sign Emmanuel Sanders, even though it may be difficult. He expects them to keep either Jason Worilds or LaMarr Woodley, but not both (or neither).

In addition, he thinks Troy Polamalu should be back. Finally, Ed would be surprised if either Todd Haley or Dick LeBeau don’t return, adding that Haley has checked his ego and adapted to the needs of his position.

The interview can be heard here:

Haley "checking his ego" essentially means he's letting Roethlisberger play call in the no huddle.

I don't want Troy or Woodley back, but I'm on the fence about Worilds. He didn't exactly light it up either, and he's going to earn a big contract that I'm not sure he deserves. Drafting their replacement might be the better option.

I'd like to see us make an attempt to keep Sanders. Worilds as well. I don't dislike Woodley, the guy as been really good in the postseason for us, but he's just been too ineffective for too long.

We have 3 D-lineman who's contracts are up: Keisel, Hood, and Woods.

They have to start keeping young players. They can't continue to let young talented players walk out the door. They must get younger, faster, and more talented on defense. If the Steelers could only keep one of them, it has to be Worilds. If the Steelers could trade Woodley, and get a decent draft pick for him....do it. If they have to cut him....do it. It sucks, but I'll take my chances with Worilds.

I do like the idea of keeping Worilds. Might get a 5th or 6th rounder for Woodley, but that could be a player you could develop for down the road.

no NFL team would want to assume Woodley's ridiculous contract, I doubt you could get a bag of chips for him. and even if you could, Woodley would eat it...

You might be right, but then again there have to be teams out there well below the cap limit who would take a chance on a player who has as much playoff experience. It's really hard to say though, there is only 1 year left on his contract.

Although, if a team wanted to take the risk on him, they'd probably be willing to wait and see if he is cut, then sign him for much less.

I don't know that anyone would even do a trade, figuring we would just release him and they could sign him to a much more affordable contract. Only time will tell what happens with Woodley. I just wish he could have stayed healthy. He couldn't.
