Default Offensive Line Coach Jack Bicknell Fired

Ok I really don't get this. The offensive line has played excellently this year, even with tons of injuries.

Really Tomlin?

After a season riddled with injuries and we still had the best line play weve seen in years?

Really Tomlin? Really? After one season? A much improved season?

What a shit move.

I don't get this either. Maybe somebody on one of the teams that had their staff fired is available as an upgrade, or maybe Bicknell tried the same move Cody Wallace did on Tomlin after the game?

Steelers Announce Coaching Staff Change

The Pittsburgh Steelers have terminated the contract of offensive line coach Jack Bicknell, Jr., it was announced today. The team will begin searching for his replacement in the upcoming weeks.

“I have decided to go in a different direction with respect to the coaching of our offensive line,” Head Coach Mike Tomlin said. “I want to thank Jack for his contributions during the 2013 season, and I wish him well in the future.”

Bicknell, Jr. joined the Steelers prior to the 2013 season.

I really hope they have an upgrade lined up. I was comfortable with the Steelers taking the same exact offense into 2014.

This is a head scratcher to me. I know the zone blocking scheme he brought with him was never implemented, but it always seemed to be understood that the reason was because of the constantly shifting personnel due to injuries. Maybe there's more to it than that.

Is it possible that someone else on the Steelers took over some of his duties, and was more responsible for the improvement than Bicknell was? If so, I never heard anything like that talked about, or any displeasure with the job he was doing mentioned from anyone.

Has anyone heard anything negative about Bicknell before this firing?

I thought the O-line showed some improvement over previous years. Bicknell must have done something they are not letting us know about, like farting in a crowded room and then pointing towards Tomlin's direction.

Keep in mind Ben was on pace for most career sacks in a single season in the first half, and the play didn't get better until starters starting getting HURT. I liked that our offensive line pulled together in the end, but I wouldn't give all of that credit to the coach considering it was horrible early. I hope the new coach comes in and installs a better blocking scheme that'll get keep Ben upright early so maybe we won't dig ourselves into a hole in yet again next year.

In the first 4 games, Ben dropped back 38, 39, 44, and 56 times. Big deficits can easily result in a lot of sacks no matter what's going on with the offensive line.

Isn't this a better argument in favor of keeping Bicknell? Instead of having (the guy who is considered to be) the best center in football, he had a final cut waiver wire pickup who was expected to be not in uniform for a single game. At left tackle, he had a guy who's hardly ever even played left tackle. He was able to make the best out of some very dire circumstances.

The one thing we do know is that some players were put in positions they weren't prepared for. I think throwing Adams in at LT after missing games last year and suffering the stab wound in the off season was probably a mistake. That could only happen if the position coach makes that determination.

Is it possible that Bicknell's zone blocking scheme was executed exactly as it was taught to them by DeCastro.
