Default Is it worth going to games anymore?

Listening to the Terrible Podcast recently, Dave & Dave discussed whether going to games is losing its luster. The Packers, Colts and Bengals all are having trouble selling playoff tickets. The recent Steelers-Bengals game on Sunday Night prime time looked like a PITT game with an embarrassing number of empties visible well into the game. With HDTV 50" TV's the norm for every man-cave, and the beer and food being cheaper from your own fridge - plus no parking, walking, 30min bathroom waits - why spend a possible $100 per ticket to attend in person when the better experience is at home watching your team plus Red Zone all at once? Aside from maybe one game per year for the "experience" and socializing, do season tickets even make sense? Curious on opinions here. NFL may have a problem on its hands for the future.

I'd much rather stay home, for all the reasons you list.

Agree, plus all your fellow close friends and steelers fans can that do not have tickets can watch it with you. I think they have prices themselves out. There is only do much people can pay. For the kind of money tickets cost, the amenities should be much better.

This right here ...

Prices will have to go down ... supply and demand

what this will do to Salaries and Contracts is yet to be seen ... Either TV Revenue goes up Prices go down and contracts stay ridiculous
or
TV Revenue stays the same , prices go down and Contracts start to lower

Who in their right mind will pay 200+ for not even great seats , and then prices for anything at the stadium as well as parking , just to Freeze their ass off ...
Teams are fun to route for , but what do they really do for you to demand these kind of prices?

Fans are finally realizing that going to a game is definitely not worth the cost in $$$, time, and lack of comfort.

Plus, you'll never "see" the game better than how it's presented on TV.

I have been to three games this season (Steelers-Ravens at Heinz; Seahawks-Saints on Monday night in Seattle; Duke-Texas A&M in Georgia Dome). I enjoyed the fan experience at all three but in each case had great seats between the 40 and 50. Paying serious $$$ for bad seats, which covers a lot of what is sold for playoff games, to freeze my ass off in crap weather has no appeal for me

Excerpts from linked column in Indy Star - the increasing attendance issues are not to be blamed on the fans - NFL needs to adjust

The possibility of a blackout is not an embarrassment for the city of Indianapolis, any more than it's an embarrassment for Cincinnati or Green Bay (which has sold out every game since 1959, except for a 1983 playoff game during the strike-shortened year).

It's an embarrassment for the NFL, which continues to handle postseason tickets in a way that makes it too difficult to sell out stadiums for the country's most beloved and popular sport.

It's an embarrassment for a league that only had two blackouts all season, and hasn't had a playoff blackout since 2002.

It's an embarrassment, a black eye, for the NFL, which overprices playoff tickets — and this, right after the holidays — and leaves fans with too little time to get themselves together in order to make a purchase.

This doesn't require any civic navel gazing; this does require the NFL to take a long, hard look in the mirror. ...

"It's a shame how the NFL blackmails cities into sellouts when they already cash the TV money check."

What's a shame is that the taxpayers subsidized the stadiums in Indianapolis and Cincinnati and paid for the renovations to Lambeau Field. Now there's a chance they will be blacked out.

Sports have got to be the only business where the consumer gets blamed for poor sales. Any other business, we'd look at the numbers and say, "Well, their price point is too high,'' or "The service stinks,'' or "They don't carry a good selection of inventory." And it's ridiculous. NFL fans are the most loyal fans we have in this country. If they're not purchasing playoff tickets, that tells me it's an NFL problem, not an Indy/Cincy/Green Bay problem.

You could not get me to sit in the stands in Green Bay tomorrow for 4 hours in -30 wind chill if you offered to pay me several hundred dollars

It'll hurt ticket sales even more, once the NFL starts partnering with Netflix, GooglePlay, ...

Is it worth the time that you spent writing this post?. It all depends on ones perspective. On one hand the game atmosphere is incomparable to a TV monitor. On the other hand, the TV experience is pretty awesome these days.
I ask myself, would I rather sit at home with a beer and watch a surf movie, or should I go out and surf and have my own experience. Choosing the latter is the easy choice. There is nothing like being there in person and experiencing things first hand. Going to games is exercise, walking to the stadium, up and down stairs, burning calories to yell n cheer and to stay warm. Its a much more healthy life being out and about than to be inside laying on the couch eating cheesy jalapeño poppers getting fatter.. But its all in perspective of the individual fan.. But you cannot smell all the stadium smells on the couch. Who doesn't love those smells?

Fan experience of games is awesome.

Prices are high but if you have money you're okay. If you're broke, todays world middle class, might as well stay home, watch your big screen.
