Default OL coach candidate Ray Brown worked with Sean Kugler in Buffalo

Offensive line coach candidate Ray Brown worked with Sean Kugler in Buffalo

With a not-so-close connection to the team, it appears Brown's experience in 2010 with the San Francisco 49ers, helping mold two rookies taken in the first round, make him a viable candidate for the Steelers' open offensive line coach position.

The Steelers are reportedly interested in discussing their offensive line coach vacancy with Panthers assistant OL coach Ray Brown.

Brown, perhaps not surprisingly, was an assistant to former Steelers OL coach Sean Kugler in Buffalo in the 2008-09 seasons.

Two main characteristics that stand out on Brown's resume in reference to the Steelers' job are his experience in dealing with fluctuation (Carolina has had turnover and injuries along its offensive line like the Steelers have) and the development of young talent.

He was in San Francisco in 2010, where he helped mold rookie first round picks Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati, the latter being an All Pro level guard now. Considering the youth of Pittsburgh's offensive line, Brown's candidacy makes sense.

The Panthers are declining to allow Brown to discuss the position now, but a report indicates they will when the Panthers season is over. They are the No. 2 seed in the NFC, and will play their first playoff game next weekend.

Brown played in 265 games over his career for four different franchises, the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals, Washington Redskins, San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions. His last start was in 2005 with Washington, losing to Seattle in the NFC divisional playoffs.

he looks like he can still get down in a 3 point stance, demonstrate some technique and knock some defensers on their ass.

maybe our youngsters need to be shown, not told.

i like the thinking (and also like that its not one of tomlins old coaching buddies)...

What happened to the guy who they said took over a lot of Bicknell's duties? Is he at least getting a thought for the job?

Either way I like the look of this guy.

all the people who think our coaches only get hired because of the rooney rule probably hate the look of this guy.

he is less than 10 years removed from playing in the league, and 265 games is a pretty impressive resume.

maybe he can bring some of what russ grimm did (besides the beer).

We need toughness and nastiness. He looks like he has it hid under that smile of his.

I'm not sure what that guys experience is as a positions coach. I can't remember for sure, but I think he's an offensive assistant coach for us. Apparently he did a great job for us, but I'm not sure if this is really a job for him, I just don't know.

Here is an article about 6'5" 318 lb Ray Brown playing OT at age 42. He used Pilates to stay flexible and healthy at that age in the NFL. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vau...90/1/index.htm

Been credited with helping youngsters like Mike Iupati, Amini Silatolu, anthony Young develop as NFL pro's. I think he could impart some knowledge on the OT's. They will find out in the interviews if he is O line coach ready or not.

He was a darn solid OL for a long time in the league.
