"A big reason Ike may have stayed around is because Dan Rooney is close to him and apparently regards Ike as someone who can communicate on Mr. Rooney's behalf to the players"

This remark has grade school level IQ..

Ike can stick around a couple years and be a nickel back... But the whole scheme in Mr. Lebeau's mind needs a pass rush. And a lot of those passes on our secondary were from the lack of one.
Ike could be back to form with some more sacks..

It's time to get serious about CB, whatever it takes.
Not every team has a corner that can shutdown the opposing #1 reciever, let alone do it for several years. Can you name anyone that has been a #1 corner for 10 years? Dont forget that the Steelers had the #1 ranked D for several years. Mel Blount was quoted about 5 years ago that Ike was his #1 in the league. Im sure he was being a little biased but if Ike could catch he would have been a household name. Last year was the worst year that he has had, but to say that every team has an Ike Taylor is a stretch. I hope that they draft his replacement this year hopefully Gilbert or Dennard in the 1st or someone in the 2nd. They will draft 2 corners I hope that one is Jean Baptiste or McGill.

This from Ed.B. of the P-G

Terminations should come soon

Ike Taylor would save the Steelers $7 million in cap space if he is released. The Steelers could act as soon as today on Taylor. He is the most likely first release because the situation with the outside linebackers is more complicated.

I do not think the Steelers are going to try and get Ike to take a salary cut - the stats show he was one of the worst CBs in the league in 2013. Steelers can go with Allen and maybe actually play the CB they draft as a rookie (what a concept) or go with Gay if that does not work out.

Ike is as easy a cut as Levi Brown is. He used to be a good scheme Corner for this team, but those days are long over.

Agreed

As we have discussed, the only question left for me is whether Dan Rooney lets them pull the trigger

Who knows what representations were made when Ike agreed to restructure in 2013

The question comes down to what do the Steelers do with the $7 million? If they bring in a top FA like Byrd or Shields, then there's no question they are better off without Ike as the #2 or #3 CB. However, if they bring in their typical mid level guys, then I don't see the team getting appreciably better through this move. Levi Brown alone gets them under the cap now. Restructure Brown and Timmons and you uncover another $8 million. I'd like to shave a few million of his base, but unless the money is put to bringing in top talent, I don't see a cut.

How about a bucket of footballs?

Ike, even in his prime and at his bes for this team, was a scheme Corner. I'd prefer a mid-level guy that has tremendous upside like a Davis, Albert, etc. than Ike. Saving 7 million which may indeed be coupled with Troy's 8 million in savings brings an All Pro player to this defense. A player that we desperately need.

Even if we don't get Orakpo, Byrd or Shields, grabbing someone like Vontae Davis could have a similar effect in only a couple of seasons playing opposite Allen. We can't justify Ike's cap hit unless it's 2< million. This free agent class is shockingly talented with depth, and grabbing a top tier Left Tackle, 3-4 DE, CB, S or OLB makes sense, even if it comes at the cost of Troy and Ike.

If they wanna bring in a Vontae Davis to replace Ike, I'd be okay with that. But somebody with starting experience has to be brought in if he's gone. They just have zero depth at the position. As for Troy, that won't happen unless a Byrd in brought in. You'd have Shamarko and Robert Golden. That's it. Troy has a place on the team in 2014, and deservedly so after a bounce back year in 2013.

What good will a "top tier" LT do when the Patriots drop 55 points on the defense, though? Put that money towards the defense. It needs it.

Every team needs a franchise LT. While I agree that the focus needs to be on defense, if we have the opportunity to grab Albert or Veldheer in order to keep Roethlisberger healthy, we have to pull the trigger. Sure, I'd rather the cap be invested into Orakpo and/or Byrd but, man, a franchise LT for Roethlisberger would be a sight for sore eyes.

Troy had a bounce back year after two years of being ineffective and the inability to stay healthy. When do we cut the cord? If we can cut Troy and bring in Orakpo and draft Bucannon/Smith/Reynolds/Dix, I do it without hesitation.

AJRII says he wants Troy to retire as a Steeler - since Troy has not announced his retirement I think he definitely stays through 2014 - this once again gets back to the Steelers not wanting to repeat the way Franco Harris went out

Cutting Ike Taylor is one thing - the fans will react much differently if they think Troy was not treated properly
