I like Ike but it was as unprecedented for Ike to agree to that contract as it was for the bandleader in The Godfather to agree to Don Corleone's terms

The Steelers made Ike an offer he couldn't refuse - there is no indication anything comparable was going to be provided by another team

OTOH I think Troy and Heath had options to be more hard nosed than they were

That might be true: Ike might not have had any other option... but, whatever the reason, he's taking a 65% pay cut... money which can be used to sign other players.

And, I'm happy.

I love what Ike has done for the team over the years, helping us win bowls and being a great dude on and off the field.....but his game needs a serious 80s style montage in the off- season

Yep. The market is so over saturated with CBs right now. Cromartie. Carlos rogers. Probably revis. Not to mention upper tier guys like Tillman, Vernor, talib.

Woodson and champ still want to play as well.

I can has been paid handsomely by the Steelers with much of that money guaranteed in the form of contract restructures. It's nice to know he has not lost sight of that.

Maybe lack of options did factor in, but I like to believe Ike showed some loyalty not often seen in the current NFL. The team and players understand this is a business, but I do believe the Steelers experience is like no other team from a players' perspective. I remeber seeing the Harrison interview last season when he was asked about LeBeau and the Steelers. I was waiting for some bitter answer and was shocked to see big tough James Harrison get teary eyed. Regardless, it was nice to see Ike acknowledge that and I'm glad to see him stay.

Ike Taylor, Steelers a natural fit

March, 10, 2014
By Scott Brown | ESPN.com

PITTSBURGH -- It made sense for the Steelers and Ike Taylor to get a deal done that will work for both sides.

The Steelers could not afford to lose a cornerback --- even one whose best days are behind him -- and Taylor did not want to finish his career anywhere else.

Presto, the contract that saves the Steelers $4.25 million in salary-cap money this year and allows Taylor to play his entire career in Pittsburgh, one that started after the Steelers unearthed a project out of Louisiana-Lafayette in the fourth round of the 2003 NFL draft.

It's tempting to wonder where Taylor would rank among the all-time Steelers' defensive backs -- and how many Pro Bowls he would have made -- had his hands cooperated as much as his coverage skills did while shadowing opponents' wide receivers.

Even with only 14 career interceptions in 11 regular seasons -- and let us not forget the pick against the Seahawks that helped Pittsburgh win Super Bowl XL -- Taylor's place in Steelers history is secure.

And he is not quite done yet.

A source told ESPN.com that Taylor had no interest in leaving the Steelers and that he wanted to do whatever he could to stay with the organization and help it return to Super Bowl contender status following back-to-back 8-8 seasons.

Hence the pay cut that satisfies both sides.

It is no secret that Taylor has an incredibly close relationship with chairman emeritus Dan Rooney, who is on a short list of candidates for a Steelers Mount Rushmore.

But his new contract is more a product of practicality than nostalgia, and Taylor gets one more season to add to his Steelers legacy -- while also serving as a bridge to the cornerbacks it is incumbent upon Pittsburgh to sign or draft.

Or both.

Makes sense. Ike will be 34 next year. How many 34 year old CBs do you see? Nobody would of paid him $3 million. He wasn't very good last year either. He is basically a nickel corner in this league now. Ike did the smart thing. I was in the let him walk last year camp and keep Keenan camp...but got to move on.

Ike Taylor would be an awesome Free Safety, IMO.... at this point in his career. But it looks like the starting safeties will be Polamalu and Will Allen. Taylor can provide good depth for nickel and dime packages. Seems like most people here are not happy Ike was retained.... I'm glad we still have him.

The starting safeties will be Troy and Shark, I would put money on it.
