Default Steelers could lose key asst coach Keith Butler

by Gerry Dulac

#Steelers could lose a key assistant coach

Former Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt interviewed with the Detroit Lions for two hours last night and will meet with the Tennessee Titans today and Cleveland Browns on Saturday about their vacant head-coach positions.

If Whisenhunt gets one of the jobs, and there is a good chance he will, it could affect the Steelers.

There is a good possibility Whisenhunt will try to hire Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler as his defensive coordinator, something he tried to do in 2007 when he left the Steelers to become head coach in Arizona.

However, the Steelers blocked that move by refusing to grant permission for the Cardinals to speak with Butler. At the time, the Steelers indicated to Butler he was the successor to Dick LeBeau as defensive coordinator when LeBeau retires.

Two years ago, Butler turned down a chance to become defensive coordinator in Indianapolis to remain with the Steelers, thinking LeBeau was nearing the end of his coaching career.

But all that has changed.

This time, several sources have indicated Butler would leave the Steelers to become a defensive coordinator if he is offered the opportunity.

Would LeBeau be worth keeping if Butler decides to leave?

If LeBeau retires and Butler is gone, Raheem Morris is going to have to get a house in the Pittsburgh area.

I'd like LeBeau to go out on his own terms, but I'd hate to lose Butler. If LeBeau decides to stay (which he has already reportedly indicated), I wouldn't blame Butler for leaving and wish him well. He's waited reasonably long enough.

I'd hate to lose him too but I do wonder somewhat if going out of org for a replacement isn't a terrible idea. I still think Whisenhunt should he go to TEN or DET both 4-3 teams, he keep the scheme in place.

Right, don't get the people who scream the defense needs new blood while giving the DC job to Butler.

He has coached pretty much a decade and a half under Lebeau, all he knows pretty much is Dick Lebeau defense.

If I'm Butler I think it depends on where he goes. Cleveland? Hell no for the simple fact Haslam and Lombardi will fire Whiz after 2 unsuccessful seasons. That's a fact. Detroit would be another story. Lots of undisciplined talent there. Probably a great opp. Tennessee, maybe.

Not to mention the fact that the Browns seem hellbent on drafting Johnny Manziel, and I can't imagine that he is Whiz's type of QB. He seems like more of a Bortles kind of guy. So I can't see Whiz taking the job in Cleveland if he has to deal with the Johnny Football circus.

butler isn't going to wait around forever. it may come down to having to choose between him and lebeau

this shit is getting old though, i think lebeau has to hang it up and make room for the next in line. it's almost like that brett favre / aaron rodgers situation
