I don't know if people forget but Butler has had chances to leave Pittsburgh to be a defensive coordinator and he didn't take them. Miami being one of them. One of the major reasons being his wife likes living here. I would think she wouldn't be thrilled with moving to Detroit.

Regardless I still think it is time for Lebeau to hang it up.

Will Steelers Let Butler Go to Titans?

By Ed Bouchette Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Good morning,

Another NFL coaching job was filled last evening when the Tennessee Titans hired former Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt.

It’s possible that hiring could have some fallout on the Steelers. Whisenhunt is expected to ask the Steelers if he can interview linebackers coach Keith Butler to become his defensive coordinator in Tennessee.

It would be Whisenhunt’s second such request. When he first went to Arizona he asked the Steelers if he could talk to Butler and they turned him down. They are expected to turn him down again.

As he was before, Butler is under contract to the Steelers. Once upon a time, there was a rule in the NFL that teams had to allow assistant coaches to interview and leave if they were offered “promotions.’’ At first, that meant from position coach to coordinator. But, as often happens, teams and coaches began abusing that.

If they already had, let’s say, an offensive coordinator in place and they wanted to hire an offensive line coach, they would offer him the job as assistant head coach/offensive line, and that technically was counted as a promotion and his current team could not prevent him from taking what was virtually a lateral job.

The league tried a few other things before finally ruling that if a coach is under contract, he could not interview or leave for other jobs unless his team allowed it or if he were interviewing for a head coaching job, the only exception.

The case of Danny Smith is a good example. Mike Tomlin wanted to hire him as his special teams coach in 2010 but he was under contract to the Washington Redskins and they said no. Tomlin asked again in 2013 even though Smith was still under contract to the Redskins. But Smith, a Pittsburgh native, pleaded his case and this time the Redskins said yes. They probably rued the day because Washington’s special teams were terrible last season.

There’s also a chance that Whisenhunt or another coach to be named a head coach will ask the Steelers to talk to Kirby Wilson as their offensive coordinator. Remember, Wilson was in line to succeed Bruce Arians as offensive coordinator with the Steelers before he was severely burned in a fire early in 2012 and Tomlin then went outside his staff and hired Todd Haley.

Wilson also is under contract as running backs coach so the Steelers also could prevent him from going anywhere.

The only way an assistant coach does not need his team’s permission is if his contract has expired. Usually, that’s a very small window between the time the season ends and the time his team offers a new contract.

The rule is a tough one for assistant coaches trying to benefit themselves, but it’s one that has added a measure of stability to coaching staffs, including the Steelers.

Apparently everyone currently in the Steelers organization and everyone that has ever been there. He's already been wanted several times for DC duties elsewhere. I think that tells you a little bit about how he is regarded.

While I think it's great that assistant coaches not under contract can have the opportunity for new and possibly even promoted positions elsewhere, I really wish Whisenhunt would stay away from our coaching staff. His ties here are long gone and I loved Whiz while he was here, but time to go steal from other organizations and leave the Steelers org the fuck alone. Really tired of him truthfully.

Then again I'm reminded that for 2 seasons the Steelers have been 8-8 with the coaches we already have. Not exactly setting the world on fire either. Ok, I'm torn. Maybe I don't give a rat's ass afterall.

Can not fault the man one bit f he chooses to leave. He's waited long enough for his chance (in Pittsburgh).
Therefore needs to think about himself first for once...
