You only have one criterion: be great/immortal. I think there are other criteria. The one Bettis fits is to be VERY GOOD for a LONG period of time. On that, I think he deserves in. There is certainly precedent for it already in the HOF.

Very Good for a long time > Great for a short time IMO

All of those guys fit the "very good but not all-time great" argument you provided.

If the Hall was a exclusive as you seem to want it to be, I would agree, but clearly in recent years it has taken a turn towards "The Hall of Very Good" and it would just seem like a double-standard to me to exclude Bettis for the reasons you listed when there have clearly been some others who have made it recently with the same criticisms.

Not to mention Bettis was an extremely unique player and redefined how we view "power backs"...all stats and awards aside that has to count for something too. Yes there were other "big backs" but none who racked up the stats and had the endurance that Bettis did.
Bus deserves the hall but those 3 players deserve the hall before Bettis did IMO. Carter was 2nd all time to rice when he retired carter was way over due.

I agree with your stats BUT, and yes he was our rival, but Earl Campbell was the greatest power back of the last 40 years!

He scored 12 TDs on that Super Bowl run but he was the back up. IN fact, he fumbled on the most important carry of his career.

The games played is deceiving as the last couple of seasons he was a short yardage and goal line guy only.

emotions on how we personally feel about someone doesnt make them a hall of famer.

and of course, as typical of this board, when someone puts stats as their debate, idiots who dont know anything post like the idiots they were brought up to be.

i tried for an off season debate.
Stallworth and Swann never lead the league in any stats. So why are they in? js

That in itself is an amazing accomplishment, and the Steelers record with a lead in the fourth quarter while The Bus was the starting RB is astounding.

That's not necessarily a stat, but it sure as shit defines how this man got it done on the field, when everyone knew he was going to get the ball. There have been a ton of running backs that can make runs and gains yards when the offense is balanced, or when the offensive line is dominating. Not many can make something out of nothing. How many times did you see Jerome Bettis being met in the hole by a linebacker at the line of scrimmage, only to see him push the pile for two or three yards. Or turn what would be a 3-4 yard gain for almost any other back into an 8-10 yard gain on power and sheer force of will.

In his prime, if you had a third or fourth down and had to gain one or two yards to gain with everything on the line, there's not another back I'd take ahead of him.

That's how I'll remember The Bus. He's a HOF running back.
BEN SAID SAY WHAT?????

yep 8 man fronts had a hard time stopping JB and talent wise Steelers didn't have much at the QB position during JB time with the Steelers.

Carter was like Art Monk, LONG OVERDUE! His play should have had him in years ago. The only reason he wasn't in then was because of his off the field crap. Sharpe I think got in because he was the best TE during the time and he was in a lot of Super Bowls. Faulk is debatable...
