Default Brett Keisel's future is in Pittsburgh even if he's not on the Steelers

By Neal Coolong

Da Beard wants to stay in Da Burgh, make no mistake about it. Whether the Steelers want to bring veteran defensive end Brett Keisel back for a 13th season with the club remains to be seen, but even if Keisel was to play somewhere else - he feels he has a few years left in him - he mentioned he and his wife both want to raise their family in Pittsburgh.

Keisel spoke on this as well as his desire to continue playing, hopefully for the Steelers, this upcoming season on SVP and Russillo on ESPN Radio.

The issue with Keisel has been injuries. Something has limited Keisel in each of the last four seasons, causing him to miss 11 games in that time. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2010, and had two sacks in the Steelers' last two games of the 2013 season.

Odds are good Keisel will get a contract somewhere this offseason. Veteran defensive ends in 3-4 defenses aren't usually sitting on the market for very long. What kind of opportunity he'll get is up in the air, but as he said, he wants to remain in Pittsburgh. With the younger (and likely more expensive) Ziggy Hood also hitting free agency, as well as the emergence of Cameron Heyward at the defensive end position, the Steelers have a few options, including re-signing one or both of their scheduled free agent former starters.

Al Woods is also a free agent option the Steelers could explore.

For now Keisel is picking up some $$ as the Head and Shoulders correspondnet at the Super Bowl

If we've learned anything about Peyton Manning over the years, it's that the man knows how to beat a blitz....

Asked by hirsute Steelers defensive end/Head & Shoulders reporter Brett Keisel if hair would be a factor in the game, he deadpanned, "A lot of people are talking about the cold, but I think hair is going to be a key component. Not enough people are talking about it, in my opinion."

I feel we still need him on the line as it likely we will zip up the Hood. By what I read Keisel does a lot for the community and so on... so I reckon he will swallow his pride and take a reduced pay to stick around.

So lets say Hood moves on and the Steelers don't mind that so much. Keisel signs a relatively inexpensive 2 year deal, Heyward gets a longer term deal, Woods, Mclendon are also retained. With Nick Williams coming off IR and likely another pick, it leaves the Steelers in a good spot with players the KNOW can play DE well, plus some younger guys to work in for the future.

I still think Keisel has some good football in him. I also think we need to get younger, but right now there is nobody else on the roster that is better than Keisel, other than Heyward.

I would like to think that the Steelers would bring Keisel back at the Vet minimum, the experience and leadership could and would only help the younger guys, JMO!

I don't know guys, third contract.... might even be his fourth. This is something the Steelers very rarely offer. Maybe if he's still available at training camp, but I call this one doubtful. Thanks Brett. The best Steeler Beard since Justin Strelzyck.....

yea I would keep him around for another couple seasons for leadership value and depth alone - people severely underestimated losses of Farrior and then Foote to injury

Put it this way - I'd be more upset about Keisel going to another team than him retiring. Hood isn't as bad as people grade him, but I feel like his replacement is already waiting to be drafted. Keep the tried and true and get another guy in the draft. Tuitt from ND would be perfect to groom IMO
