Default Munchak scouts talents in later rounds

In this morning’s paper I wrote a story on new offensive line coach with the help of three of his former players from the Tennessee Titans. They all praised the work Munchak did in Tennessee and they all agreed he does not need a bunch of high-end draft choices to be successful.

Munchak does have some former high draft choices to work with in Pittsburgh, but his track record suggests he has an eye for talent in the lower rounds.

Former Steelers center Justin Hartwig is a prime example. He was a tackle at the University of Kansas, and Munchak picked him up in the sixth round. Munchak’s five starters last season included two fourth-rounders, two second-rounders and one first-rounder.

“Munch is smart. He can go to Eastern Washington and find a guy like Michael Roos, who was drafted in the second round,” former Titans tight end Frank Wycheck said. “He doesn’t have to work with a top 10 draft pick or one of the top tackles in the draft. He really has an eye for talent in the later rounds. You can look at what he did with Justin Hartwig. He was a 6-5 tackle who Munch made into a center. Then Hartwig signs a big free agent contract with Carolina. That’s what Munch brings to the table.”

Wycheck and former Titans tackle both referenced Hartwig when they talked about Munchak’s ability to scout talent in the later rounds.

“Think about what Munch did with a guy like Justin Hartwig,” said former Tennessee tackle Brad Hopkins said. “He was a tackle when we got him and Munch converted him to a center. He easily converted him to a center. If he can make it work with a guy like Hartwig, it’s going to be easy with a guy like [Maurkice] Pouncey who has all of the skills necessary to run that system. With a proven guy like him it’s going to be easy.”

Hopkins said Munchak is missed by his former players in Tennessee.

“People hated to see Munch go,” Hopkins said. “If you talked to players they all said they wanted to see him come back. That decision was made by [general manager Ruston] Webster and the owner. They wanted him to change some things and he stood his ground. That ultimately cost him his job. It had nothing to do with players. They all wanted him to come back.”

If he can turn Adams into what Adams is "supposed" to be, the hiring will have been a home run.

Imagine Adams at his full potential.

I'm predicting the best O-line in the league. Write it down, angrychair.

I'm very optimistic regarding Munchak's hiring.

His eye for talent makes it all the better.

This is another BIG reason why his hiring is genius.

Quit wasting top picks on OL and fix the D instead.

Find guys in later rounds (or undrafted) who can be plugged in.

If anyone can do it, it's Munchak.

That... and turning guys who "have potential" (Adams, Gilbert) into guys who "play up to their potential."

Adams might be the most physically gifted lineman that we have (better than DD or even Pouncey). And, Gilbert is no slouch either. If anyone can turn these C students into valedictorians, Munchak can.

The way they've looked at times, it'll be nothing short of a Helen Keller miracle if they can get their GEDs.

The Steelers are Lou Diamond Phillips and co.

Mike Munchak is Edward James Olmos.

He's going to make the Steelers Stand and Deliver!

I was thinking maybe he and Tomlin might need to go all "The Principal" on them myself.

"NO MORE!"
