Mike Munchak will join the Pittsburgh Steelers as their new offensive line coach, league sources confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday night.

The Hall of Fame offensive lineman was fired as coach of the Tennessee Titans earlier this month, after compiling a three-season mark of 22-26 and not taking the team to the playoffs. Before leading the Titans, he was their offensive line coach for 14 years.

Munchak and the Steelers met last Friday about the position, which was left open when coach Mike Tomlin fired Jack Bicknell Jr. after just one season.

Munchak's name has been mentioned with several head-coaching vacancies since the regular season ended, including the still-open Cleveland Browns position and the since-filled spots with the Detroit Lions and Penn State Nittany Lions.

He will be the fourth offensive line coach the Steelers have had since Tomlin took over in 2007.

Despite coming on strong late in the year, Pittsburgh fielded one of the worst rushing attacks in the NFL, finishing tied for 27th with 86.4 yards per game. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was sacked 42 times, seventh most in the NFL.

News of Munchak's hiring was first reported by the Houston Chronicle.

Suck it, ESPN!

Still no statement from the Steelers as far as I know.

You go girl!

Is that guy really that good?

I don't even know why I am excited!
I've pretty much watched his entire NFL career. Ask any Stiller defender what they think about playing against him.

Warren Moon, Eddie George, Steve McNair, and Chris Johnson all say hell yeah! Like said above, think about Russ Grimm, but a more qualified coach.

I wouldn't mind if he was named assistant head coach like r. Grimm and help out Mike Tomlin with clock management.

Sweet.

Hopefully this also means no drafting OL early in the draft.

Let Munchak use his acumen and work with the talent already on the roster.

It's going to be interesting to see if Munchak can help Adams develop into anything more than an average play every now and then type of player.

Steelers hire Munchak to coach offensive line
January 22, 2014 9:24 PM
By Ed Bouchette / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Mike Munchak, who grew up in Scranton a Steelers fan before he went to Penn State and became a Pro Football Hall of Fame guard, is the new Steelers offensive line coach.

Munchak accepted Mike Tomlinís offer to become his fourth offensive line coach, weeks after he was fired as head coach of the Tennessee Titans. Tomlin interviewed Munchak last week to replace Jack Bicknell Jr., who was fired after one season.

Munchak, 53, spent the past three seasons as head coach of the Titans, who defeated the Steelers in the 2013 season opener at Heinz Field. Before that, he coached the Titans' offensive line for 14 seasons after a 12-year career as a guard for the Houston Oilers that landed him in the Hall of Fame as part of the same 2001 class with Lynn Swann.

During his tenure as line coach of the Titans, Munchak taught the zone blocking scheme the Steelers want to use but abandoned after their loss to Tennessee last season.

Munchak had a reputation as one of the best line coaches in the NFL before he ascended to the Titans' head coaching position. During his tenure as line coach, his linemen made 10 Pro Bowls and their running backs, including Eddie George, Chris Brown and Chris Johnson, were among the best in the league.

Munchak, who played at Scranton High School, was an offensive lineman at Penn State from 1978 through 1981. The Houston Oilers drafted him in the first round in 1982, and he went on to be selected to the NFLís all-1980s decade team.

Munchak gives the Steelers three former NFL head coaches on Tomlinís staff, along with offensive coordinator Todd Haley and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau. Munchak and LeBeau are both in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as players.

Munchak is owed $3 million on the final year of his contract with Tennessee, an amount that will be reduced by whatever salary the Steelers pay him. There were reports that the Titans wanted to keep Munchak as their coach and to extend his contract, but that they wanted him to make changes in his coaching staff as part of the deal. Munchak reportedly refused, and the Titans fired him. They hired former Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt to replace him.

And if i remember correctly, Munchak played against Bill Cowher when Bill was both a player and a coach in the NFL. Just goes to show that Tomlin can only win with Cowher's opponents .

to add.. I was kind of thinking he was gonna get the State job so to have him here is awesome.. It'd be nice to have him for a few years but I doubt that happens either way he had some pretty good lines with the titans

its funny cause i saw he was hired on the bottom line but didnt catch who hired him and was like, thats a pretty good hire for them..

who knew

it wouldnt be me without posting one of these..
