Default Points per game we have to score to win the division

We have to score 27 points per game to compete in the league these days... That's 432 points total.. The Steeler season high for points is 416 in 1979, that is 26 per game. The Ben Rothlisberger era high total was in 2007 at 393. Cincinnati scored 430 last year and were tied for 3rd with the Chiefs in the AFC..NE 444 Den 606..(LOL yea right)

Our defense gave up a whopping 370 points! that is 143 more that 2011 at 227. The only way to remedy the defensive struggles is to get better on D, and/or score more on O. I think it could be easier to score more next season on O than improve the D that much.. We need entirely too many players on that side of the ball.

The only way to bring the 27 points per game total down is to allow way less points on D. Then the % would work out.

I say get a macking receiver in the first round if they are on the board and are ranked close to the ranking of the defensive players available at the time... It's a crazy scenario we have not been in in a very long time... Pre Cowher maybe?...

Can't hurt! I'm a firm believer that to win consistently against the top competition your team has to be good in all three phases. The offense is on the rise, special teams showed flashes, but the defense is where we need help now.

I'm pretty confident that the offense will be able to compete with any team, if we don't lose field position on kicks, and don't give up big plays. Can we fix both the defense and put the offense over the top in one offseason?

This is exactly why I have been saying we need Kelvin Benjamin. If we close a small hole to complete our offense now, it will have a greater effect in the short- and long-term than trying to fix one of the many glaring holes we have on defense. Dennard and Gilbert won't fix that unit, but we can help the defense out a bit by fixing our worst problem on offense- red zone touchdown efficiency.

The last time we gave up over 370 pts was 88, 421.....

yr ---- pts sc ---- pts al - Diff

2013 --- 379 --- 370 --- 9
2012 --- 336 --- 314 --- 22
2011 --- 325 --- 227 --- 98
2010 --- 375 --- 232 --- 143 **
2009 --- 368 --- 324 --- 44
2008 --- 347 --- 223 --- 124 **
2007 --- 393 --- 269 --- 124
2006 --- 353 --- 315 --- 38
2005 --- 389 --- 258 --- 131 **
2004 --- 372 --- 251 --- 121

1979 --- 416 * - 262 --- 154 **
1978 --- 356 --- 195 --- 161 **
1976 --- 342 --- 138 * - 204
1975 --- 373 --- 162 --- 211 **+
1974 --- 305 --- 189 --- 116 **

As you can see, the superbowl years all had over 116 point dif.. average is 148...

148 point dif.. That is huge... (I included the 10 season in the ave cause we should have won that freakin game)

* = season record
**= superbowl year
+= ave record

This was such a weird season. Defense started out playing well enough, but offense wasn't scoring at all. Then the defense got porous and the offense picked up.

So if we score about 432, then we can give up 300 and under and be ok , roughly...

Score-------- 27------ per game
Give up------18.75 --per game

The quickest way to solve the defensive problems will most likely be through FA. It would be a short term fix while the younger d players develop. Get a stud offensive player with 1.15 and well be set.

There's a better chance of a great defensive player at 15 than a great WR Imo

This draft is deep at WR. Davante Adams, Jordan Matthews, Martavius Bryant, Donte Moncrief & Jarvis Landry would be better value in the 2nd/3rd round than drafting a WR in the 1st Imo

But If Evans falls to us(I bet Ravens trade up if he is) he'll be the pick.

I don't disagree that red zone efficiency is the biggest problem facing the offense, I just don't know if Benjamin is the answer to that. By all accounts he's raw. Loads of talent, but pretty raw for a top 15 pick. If they want a project, why not stick to their sweet spot in the 3rd round? There's a lot more Mike Wiliams in the league than there are Vincent Jacksons. Maybe they look into a guy like Brandon Coleman from Rutgers. Taller, faster, and stronger than Benjamin at the combine. Needs more work, but not getting the hype that's pushed up KB.

Quite frankly, I see WR trending the way of RBs where their value and draft stock start to diminish for anything but top level guys. It's a lot easier to get open when you're running 3, 4, and 5 WR sets but it's a LOT harder to keep all of those guys contained in coverage. That's why I think the secondary, both CB and S, have to be priority #1 in the draft as well as FA.
