For starters, he's 5'9. The argument could be made that there's less emphasis on height and size due to guys like Jairus Byrd and Earl Thomas at 5'10 each, but these guys are both ball hawks which leads me to my next point. While at Syracuse, he showed no signs of instinctual ball hawking ability and was known for his ability to punish the catch rather than to break it up or pick it off.

what I think about Thomas is that he could play both safety positions, but I think he's more suited to play SS because of his body size and athletic ability. It might end up being a question of getting your best players on the field, and going through the offseason and camp is going to answer those questions.

Could he play FS? Yes.
Is he better suited to play FS? Absolutely.

James Harrison could (& did) play ILB, but his skill-set & physical attributes were far better suited for OLB.

This move would have to be contingent on him taking a large pay cut.

For what it's worth I'd agree. His stature, history and last year's usage would lead me to believe the SS role and that underneath defender is where the team see him fitting.
Still think we could hit the FA for a FS (high safety) role player, not the high end salary players, but a friendly cap type player.

Fill this role in FA, and CB via the draft imo.

If Clinton-Dix falls to us in the draft, consider us Monica Lewinsky.

Shamarko is more suited as a SS. We need a FS.
