Default Cowher praises Bettis by knocking his quarterbacks

At least we know Cowher gets it after all these years.

Cowher praises Bettis by knocking his quarterbacks

Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher is pressing the case that his old running back, Jerome Bettis, deserves to be voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday. And part of Cowher’s case is that those Steelers teams didn’t have very good quarterbacks.

Cowher, the Steelers’ coach for Bettis’s entire 10-year run in Pittsburgh, told the Post-Gazette that Bettis had a harder job than most running backs, because most running backs get more help from their teams’ passing games than Bettis ever got.

“With all due respect,” Cowher said, “for most of his career he played in an offense without a quarterback you could name.”

If you can name those quarterbacks, they’re names you’d probably rather forget if you like good offensive football. The names of Mike Tomczak, Kordell Stewart, Kent Graham and Tommy Maddox don’t exactly inspire fear in opposing defenses.

“Whoever it was, any of our quarterbacks, when you played us, we were a running offense and what we accomplished with a running offense was pretty amazing,” Cowher said. “He gave us our identity. We ran what people knew we were going to run. We were a running football team. If you wanted to stop the Pittsburgh Steelers, you had to stop the run first.”

If Bettis makes the Hall of Fame, his average of 3.9 yards per carry would be tied for the lowest of any Hall of Fame running back. But Cowher does have a point: Most of those Hall of Fame running backs played with better quarterbacks than Bettis did.

that's a pretty harsh way for Cowher to put it after all this time, and it isn't true. We didn't have franchise QB's, but people knew their names.

Cowher is probably pushing a hard sell. Kordell with all his warts (pun intended) is still a household name.

good point. But Cowher has become some what of a NFL statesman. It's surprising to hear him put down players he worked with. I guess you're right though, this just shows how much he thinks of Bettis.

They are QB's that Steeler fans can name, but not the rest of the national fan base.

To put in perspective, can you name the KC quarterbacks that handed off the football to Priest Holmes in his prime? I bet the KC fans can.

Who were the Rams QB's that played in front of Eric Dickerson? Jim Everitt comes to mind, but I cant tell you the rest. I bet Rams fans can though.

But Cowher could name them, and coming from his perspective, I'm just surprised to see him willing to be so quick to put down the people who played under him.

EDIT: I guess I just hold Cowher in such high esteem I'm just surprised to hear him say this, like I say though, I guess it just shows how much he thinks of Bettis

It is pretty harsh and I wouldn't be surprised to see The Park Ranger respond (assuming he still has his TV gig).

QBs nothing....If you want a few non household names, how about the receivers we had during that time? I'm soooo sure there were more than a few DC that lost sleep over Mark Bruener, Dwight Stone, or Troy Edwards, beating them down the seam.

If John Riggins is good enough to be in the Hall of Fame, then so is Jerome Bettis.

YOu can go up and down that Top 20 rb list and say the same thing. He isn't in already because there's sentiment to keep the Steelers from getting more players in their "wing".

12 out of the top 20 are in the HOF. Bettis is number 6.
