Jamal Charles has had two or three good years. So has MJD, Ray Rice, CJ2K, et al. Call me when any of them reaches 13,000 yards.

True, a lot of this could depend on what Cowher meant exactly and to whom he was speaking. It just seemed to me that the person of the article took quotes Cowher made to the Post Gazette, whose audience would be able to name the QB's.

I don't believe he was taking a shot at those players as much as he was standing up for Bettis. But when a statement begins "with all due respect", and the object of that sentence is deemed unnameable, the sincerity of giving due respect might be called into question.

Anyway point I'm trying to make is look at all of the good backs in the past 5 years (AP, Charles, Jones-Drew, Frank Gore, Chris Johnson, Ray Rice, etc). It's no coincidence that they have had mediocre quarterbacks. Lacy seemed to emerge as a star RB this year but nobody mentions Rodgers being out for most of the year. I think there's a correlation there.

The worse the quarterback the more opportunities for carries regardless if they're seeing 8-9 in the box. The offense also tailors around that player.
I don't think you can compare the past 5 years to the era Betttis played in. Offensive strategy was different on the whole.

Barry Sanders put up huge numbers running against 8-9 in the box. If he has any QB better than Rodney Peete, then he would have likely had less negative yardage runs and fewer long runs. Opponents loaded up the box vs the Lions and either got Barry, or Barry got loose for a long run.

Emmit Smith had a Hall of fame QB, WR and O line playing with him and of course he puts up numbers. Emmit had the best situation of any RB in history IMO.

Curtis Martin played with Drew Bledsoe, Boomer Esiason, Neil O'Donnell, Vinny Testaverde, Chad Pennington in the similar era as Bettis. Those guys could make teams pay for loading up the box.

Walter Payton for the most part didn't have great QB's, until McMahon came along. That is why you see highlights of him running all over the place to get yardage and reverse his field. Matt Suhey opened seams and Payton got thru them.

In his prime, Bettis was special. I'd love to watch him play again in his prime and to me that is what makes a HOF player. I think a lot of credit needs to goto Tim Lester, Jon Witman, Brendon Stai, John Jackson, Leon Search, Justin Strelczyk, Dermonti Dawnson, etc.............teams knew the run was coming and collectively the Steelers in front of Bettis still made it happen.

To put in perspective, can you name the KC quarterbacks that handed off the football to Priest Holmes in his prime? I bet the KC fans can.

Who were the Rams QB's that played in front of Eric Dickerson? Jim Everitt comes to mind, but I cant tell you the rest. I bet Rams fans can though.
Just like Bettis, Dickerson left and I believe Everett was the only QB he had in LA! Who was his QBs in OAK and IND?

Indy would have been early 90s, so... Trudeau and George?

I want to throw the Majik man in there, too, but I can't recall if he was there when Dickerson was.

Nothing Cowher said is controversial and the headline is taking just enough liberty to gain attention (a media must these days).

What Cowher says is correct. Neil O'Donnell, Mike Tomczak, Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox were never household names. Slash came the closest, but the other three are mostly only infamous.

Jerome Bettis and Neil O'Donnell never played on the same team.

ACK!

Touche.

Point is that every post-Bradshaw/pre-Roethlisberger QB is a footnote in history. Ergo, what Cowher said is on point and should be taken in the spirit intended.

Dwight stone and Bettis did not play together
