Default Steelers Roster Development

Just my 2 cents (guesses) on what I think may happen going forward:

1. Cap issues: Roethlisberger will probably not be extended this off-season (IMO smart). Polamalu, yes. Ike released and re-signed.

2. Outside LB: Woodley post-June 1 release. Worilds re-signed.

3. Wide Receiver: Sanders is as good as gone. Under-rated Cotchery re-signed.

4. Safety: No contract offer for Clark, 1st or 2nd round pick to compete with Allen/Thomas.

5. Backup RB: Dwyer re-signed, Jones not.

6. Remaining draft picks: possibly CB, WR, DL, T

7. Free agent wish list: RB Gerhart to replace the others, WR Tate to replace Hines (dreaming), T Otto (not a reach via Munchak), ILB Williams (Bears), CB Brown (49ers)

Leaning on Pro Football GM. They organize rosters by position against the salary cap for upcoming years, giving the reader a good feel for a teams rosters from a general manager perspective.

Thoughts?

Ben will be given an extension and retire as a Pittsburgh Steeler.

Can't really argue with anything you've posted. I think Cotchery's 10 TDs will might get him an offer we can't compete with. I like Dwyer as a back up, and I'm interested to see if they bring La'rod Stephens-Howling back.

Yeah, very well could happen. Maybe Rooney's comments were simply buying himself some leverage, or providing FO options. Personally, considering how he plays, OL issues, etc, would consider possibly franchise-tagging him in 2016.

And if they do, I say at times you play both Stephens-Howling and Bell in the same set: you can spread both sides of the field for Ben for check downs/short passes.

For some reason, not to worried about Cotchery leaving. He likes it in Pittsburgh...just wish they would feature him in the offense more.

that's a really good idea with the RB's. I like it a lot!

As for Cotchery, I would think if Sanders leaves next year we'll see more of ol' Jerricho due to Wheaton's inexperience.

And that would be a good thing from my perspective, Cotchery can be a very good #2. It's that 3rd that leaves you wondering. Are we going to see Wheaton come to terms mentally with the NFL? If he can put it together, his upside is seemly fantastic.

Cotchery is not a #2. He is an over-achieving 3 or 4 who took advantage of Heath being slow to return to form. Don't expect the Steelers to sign him for #2 WR money. If he expects that, he can hit the bricks. Wheaton has to prove his fingers aren't made of chalk first of all. As for Ben, if the Steelers are smart they don't extend him at all. Let him play his final 2 years under contract and franchise him for a 3rd if needed. If the team misses the playoffs the next season or two, at least we don't mortgage our future.

Share your sentiments concerning Ben. As far Cotchery, you could be right, perhaps we are overrating his production from 2013. Players have up and down years, and maybe he peaked last year. According to Pro Football Focus though, he was the #26 most productive receiver in the league (based on playing 2/3's of the time, 648 snaps). If he played #2 snaps and continued his solid play, he would have finished in the top 15-20 of all receivers in the league.

Cotchery got 10 TDs. Miller's career high is 8. So, no, Cotchery didn't "take advantage" of anything - he helped this team in more ways than we even thought possible in the tune of 602 yards and 46 catches. He became the safety blanket that Miller was, and so much more.

Wheaton has to prove his hands aren't made of chalk? I don't know if you realize this, but Wheaton played mostly on special teams because of our deep our receiving core is. AB, Manny, Cotch and Miller round out the top 4. How often do we play in a 5 wide, spread offense? We don't. We use a single back formation for the vast majority of our offense snaps. Wheaton simply didn't get the opportunity to play this year, similar to AB in his first season. It's a good thing that AB guy didn't amount to anything.
