In addition to working around programming costs someone also could figure out how to steal their neighbor's Wi-Fi signal in order to eliminate any cost for programming or broadband fees whatsoever while watching the shows on stolen equipment

For purposes of how telecom costs are inflated I am assuming the customer works within the legal/regulatory system established for buying programming and broadband access

Folks thought Napster was the answer to the high cost of recorded music too - that did not provide a long term solution

Yeah, Napster went away quick though. Pirate Bay just celebrated its 10th year anniversary.

You can download music on there too.

And it's not just Pirate Bay, that's just ONE of the bigger torrent sites. Torrents and streaming sites are here to stay. They just get more widespread every year.

Yeah, KAT is pretty steady as well. PB is only ever really down for a day at worst, and that has happened a couple of times, but their proxy servers work fine when that happens.

That wasn't too long ago that PB was under all those attacks. It was funny to watch them jump from one countries servers to another in the space of 18 hours. No problems since then. They're back under their normal Swedish server.

And it is nothing but whack-a-mole for the feds right now. It was funny when all the sports streaming sites got shutdown a couple of years ago and were back up under different servers within a day.

Six Domains Later, The Pirate Bay Returns to Sweden

December 20, 2013 // 04:15 PM EST

Well, they're back where they started.
We've been following The Pirate Bay, as it leaps from one country-coded top level domain to another, and the site has leapt another two domains in just the last week. TPB's Peruvian site was shut down, so the site moved to a Guyana-based domain, thepiratebay.gy. I'm not even going to bother linking to it, since within the day yesterday, the site was taken down and TPB was back to its Swedish domain, no doubt looking tanner for all of its time away.

View The Year in Pirate Bay Domains in a larger map
TorrentFreak's insider from TPB told them that the site keeps several domains ready to go, which explains how it's able to pop up under a new domain just as soon as its old one is taken down. “We have some 70 domain names left, so eventually we will find one that sticks,” the insider said.
Will the Swedish domain be a keeper? The last time regulators tried to get the Swedish site taken down, the domain registrar didn't see why that was their responsibility, and presciently noted that the domain name isn't really the issue. "Removing domain names from the address sphere is like removing the sign for a store in the city,” said Danny Aert, the registrar's CEO. “It will be harder for customers to locate the store, but the store nevertheless remains in place and customers who manage to get there can still shop there.”
Even if the domain stays up through the New Year, Sweden has been less than accommodating to the BitTorrent site. In 2009 the Stockholm district court sentenced the founders of the site to a year in prison and a $3.5 million fine each; in appeal the sentence was lowered and the fine was raised. Sweden also extradited one of the co-founders, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, to Denmark where he will be spending this Christmas held in solitary confinement for allegedy hacking the Danish social security database, driver’s license database, and the shared IT system used in the Schengen zone.** Warg's mother, along with Julian Assange, feels that this is unreasonably harsh, especially because Warg was acquitted of similar crimes in Sweden.
The site Warg co-founded will keep moving, even as he cannot. Governments understand how to lock up a person—a website continues to elude them.
