Default Worilds only interested in re-signing if guaranteed a starting job

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10...-named-starter

Quote:
Jason Worilds is open to re-signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers before he becomes an unrestricted free agent in March, with one caveat: The outside linebacker has to be confident he has secured a starting job.

Worilds led the Steelers with eight sacks in 2013, starting 11 games -- one more than he had started in his first three years combined -- during a breakout season. He also finished second on the team with 29 quarterback pressures and recorded 63 tackles with two forced fumbles.

When asked if he wants to stay in Pittsburgh, Worilds told ESPN.com during a telephone interview, "If the circumstances are right, for sure. They haven't been right for me in the past. I wouldn't want to fall back into (not starting) again."
...

Quote:
Worilds said he has not been given any indication by the Steelers about what their plans at outside linebacker.

"I've just been patient and (waiting to) see how the Steelers view me," said Worilds, who has been training in his native New Jersey. "The biggest thing is just being in the right situation."
...

Quote:
Worilds, who turns 26 in March, said the impact he made in 2013 simply stemmed from playing on a regular basis.

"It's been rough just to get on the field, especially when you probably could have helped the team in years past, but you just weren't given an opportunity," Worilds said. "The opportunity came this year, and I did well with it. For me to get out there and play consistently I kind of feel like I showed some people what I could do."

I think if we re-sign him he's pretty much got to start. So that shouldn't be a problem.

Get the deal done. We can't lose him because of Woodley.

If we re-sign him, Woodley's days are numbered... fact. That automatically means he will start. It surely won't be Chris Carter.

Hey, Kony Ealy should be available at 15. I'm pretty against signing an oft-injured, unproductive Linebacker to a huge deal. It's amazing to me that people who will rake Woodley across the coals want Worilds signed, as if he's any better than a healthy Woodley.

My answer? Let Worilds walk and draft Ealy.

I originally thought it was a really tough decision as well, but I really don't anymore. What has Worilds done prior to this season? Let's run down the check list:

Underachieve for three seasons? Check.
Develop at a snails pace? Check
When given snaps on the right side, disappear? Check
Oft-injured? Check
Have a solid, if not unspectacular season at LOLB? Check

If he wants any more than a 5 year, 32.5 million dollar deal, he can enjoy the weather in Tennessee. Draft Kony Ealy and plug him at LOLB and watch the fireworks. Ealy and Jarvis...

To play devil's advocate for Worilds:

Greg Lloyd was often injured early on (back-to-back knee surgeries). James Harrison was slow to develop.

That said, those two LBs has a massive chip on their shoulder.

Which is a fair point, but Harrison and Lloyd weren't exclusively great at one position. Plug Worilds back at ROLB and you're looking at 5< sacks and his continual struggles to seal the edge and contain the pocket would just be exacerbated.

Indeed.

Still, if he can play like he did this past season, for a good price, I wouldn't mind keeping him.
