Default A sincere question about Landry Jones and QBs like him...

I know people on here hate Landry Jones, thinks he was a wasted pick yadda yadda but I am curious on something.

Besides watching film, reading the playbook, throwing around some balls at practice...doesn't it hurt his development to just stand on the sidelines just watching?

Obviously I'm not in anyway saying pull BB from a few regular season games and start Landry, but if BB goes down and so does Gradkowski can we even really expect much from someone who has zero regular season experience?

Let's just say Landry wanted a starting QB job elsewhere in the league, how could he ever prove his worth?

He can't. He had four years at Oklahoma to prove his worth to teams and failed to do so.

He was once considered a first round pick with tremendous upside. Then his senior year happened.

I'm sure if a team wants Landry Jones they'll offer him.......an invite.

I'm sure that'll happen because eventually he'll be released.......eventually.

If Landry Jones wants it he'll go get it, because even though he's the brunt of jokes, he still might have what it takes, a strong arm, accuracy and some mobility and pocket awareness. Sure, he hasn't shown it with the Pittsburgh steelers so how would I know....lol

I YouTube...ed an Oklahoma highlight video.

It's in Landry Jones somewhere.

If your #1 and #2 QB go down your season is screwed, look what happened to the cardinals. The #3 is usually a project QB and is never intended to see the field

He's been on the sidelines for 2 seasons. He will likely be on the sidelines for all of next season as well, but the coaches will be able to tell if he progresses in practice, preseason games, training camp, etc. He is kind of in the Ryan Mallet situation when the Patriots drafted Mallett 4 years ago.

If the Steelers think Jones has what it takes, then they will likely let Gradkowski go after the 2015 season and elevate Jones to the #2 spot in 2016. After that, who knows what the situation will be.

some guys just have it and some don't. Ben never had a regular season start and a lot less practice when he became the starter. Tommy Maddux goes down in the 2nd game of Ben's rookie year and he comes in and then goes 14-0 the rest of the way and the rest is history. Brady pretty much had the same path when Bledsoe went down. Rodgers had it too, it just took him until his 4th year to get his chance. If the coaches think Landry Jones is good enough, he'll get his chance at some point, whether it's with the Steelers or someone else.

The issue is Jones' path to get here. He looked very good in his junior season, then fell off in his senior season quite considerably. However, a couple of years ago he played against Texas and looked very good for the first half and a bit, then tapered off by the end. That Texas game is a microcosm of his career - very strong start, then a tapered off end.

I'll try to find it, but he did show flashes against Texas and throughout his career at Oklahoma, just not consistently enough. Is the the future of this team at Quarterback? I doubt it. I very much doubt it. But that's not saying he couldn't turn into an Alex Smith-type Quarterback for someone else. He's also 25 so his clock is running out, but he could eventually turn into a west coast passer for a team.

There's this thing teams do in the off season with training camps, OTAs, and other such activities that allow players to compete for roster spots and pecking order. Jones has apparently not risen above 3rd string yet. The best players see the field. Period.
