2014 NFL Draft: Pittsburgh Steelers 7-Round Mock 1.0

March 7, 2014 by Jeff Hartman

Round 2. WR - Jordan Matthews - Vanderbilt

Steelers fans are too familiar with taking a wide receiver in the second round, but even after the Limas Sweed fiasco, Jordan Matthews should be a target for Pittsburgh in the second round. Matthews doesn't scream of first round talent, but he could be a receiver that could fit into the Steelers' scheme. At 6-foot-3 and 212-pounds, Matthews would be the sizable target that Ben Roethlisberger has been requesting for years. With a 4.46 40-yard dash at the combine, he has the speed to boot. Matthews would be a welcome addition to the Steelers offense.

this signing increases the odds of Mike Evans being available when we select at #15 as the Lions who pick ahead of us were in need of a WR to take some of the coverage away from Calvin Johnson:

Lions, Golden Tate agree on 5 years

Updated: March 12, 2014
By Michael Rothstein | ESPN.com

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions have landed one of their top free agency targets.

The team announced it has agreed to a five-year deal with wide receiver Golden Tate on Wednesday afternoon. Further terms were not disclosed.

Tate had flown to Detroit on Tuesday to meet with the team and spent Wednesday at the facility. Wide receiver had been a top priority for the Lions both in free agency and the draft and Tate offers versatility, being able to play both in the slot and outside.

"[He] definitely would be a valuable piece to this already deadly offense," Lions running back Joique Bell said earlier Wednesday, before a deal was agreed to.

Tate is the second free agent wide receiver the Lions have signed in the past 24 hours. The team agreed to a one-year deal re-signing Kevin Ogletree on Tuesday.

He had the best season of his career in 2013 with 64 receptions for 898 yards in the regular season. He also was one of the top punt returners in the league, averaging 11.5 yards per return on 51 attempts.

Tate, 25, was a second-round draft choice by the Seahawks out of Notre Dame in 2010. He had 12 touchdown catches over the last two seasons, including one of the most memorable plays in each of those years.

The first was the so-called "Fail Mary" or "Inaccurate Reception" when a replacement official ruled Tate had control of the ball as he fell in the end zone on the final play of the game against Green Bay in the second game of 2012. Tate was battling Packers defender M.D. Jennings for possession.

The second was in St. Louis last October when Tate scored on an 80-yard catch-and-run down the sidelines, but was flagged for taunting as he stuck out his hand to Rams defender Rodney McLeod to indicate McLeod could not catch him. Tate later apologized for the taunt.

yes, it is. Golden Tate reminds me of Hines Ward at times...

the Lions can now address another need on draft day, my guess is that CB Justin Gilbert will now be squarely in their sights.

I hope that they go after Ha Ha Cinton-Dix. Likewise, I hope that the Bills go after Calvin Pryor.

...leaving Dennard & Gilbert (& Evans) to fall to 15.

My hope for the first round is we somehow land Hingle McCringleberry, TE from Penn State. He's an absolute stud, my only concern is his on-field issues. He tends to celebrate too much and draw penalties.

As Denny Green said, when he drafted Randy Moss, while already having Chris Carter & Jake Reed on the roster: "It's a good problem to have."
