JM: Does Heyward-Bey have any shot to make the team with the emergence of J. Brown? I would assume Bryant has an inside track due to his possible upside and the 5th WR doesn't play much unless there is injuries.

Ed Bouchette: Mike Tomlin was effusive in his praise of Darrius Heyward-Bey today, so I would think he has a shot if they keep six.

here's the tall WR Ben has been asking for:

Steelers work out former U.S. Army Ranger

August, 27, 2014
By Scott Brown | ESPN.com

The Steelers worked out defensive end Alejandro Villanueva on Wednesday, per ESPN.com’s Field Yates.

The Steelers routinely work out players at team headquarters throughout the year but Villanueva is not just anyone who is pursuing a dream of playing in the NFL.

Villanueva is a former U.S. Army Ranger, and he completed three tours in Afghanistan, earning a Bronze Star Medal for bravery. His service -- and here is more on that in a terrific piece written in May by ESPN.com NFL columnist Ashley Fox -- is not all that stands out about Villanueva.

He is 6-9, 277 pounds and Villanueva had been with the Philadelphia Eagles before getting released earlier this week.

Villanueva, 25, played at Army and then fulfilled his military commitment after graduating from West Point. He signed with the Eagles in May after catching the organization’s attendance at a regional combine, and Villanueva had been trying to make the team as a defensive end.

Villanueva has not played football since 2009 but his size and athleticism make him an intriguing prospect. He played multiple positions at Army and his senior year Villanueva moved to wide receiver and led the team with 34 receptions for 522 yards and five touchdowns.

Chris Bradford @BCTBradford

Moye has been informed #Steelers will place him on 10-man practice squad should he clear waivers

Moye on release: "I wasn’t necessarily surprised about it. I could see it coming a little bit with the other people before me."

with all of our current red-zone issues, Kelvin Benjamin would look really good in Black & Gold right now...

I'm still standing behind Panthers wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin for Offensive Rookie of the Year. He made a string of big-time catches against the Bengals and continues to loom as a matchup nightmare for lone cover men. He knows how to use his dominant size. After many saw him as a boom-or-bust candidate before the draft, I'm impressed with the rookie's consistency and growth over the first six games of his career.

Please. Benjamin has had drops all over the place. People would have been raking him over the coals consistently.

perhaps, but in his first 6 games Benjamin has caught 31 passes (21 for 1st downs) for 416 yards (13.4 avg) with 4 TD receptions.

not too shabby for a rookie WR...

I don't know. But I bet he would come in handy in the red zone.
Not saying cure all our red zone woes but his production thus far would help.

yup, we're getting virtually no production from any of our WRs besides Brown and Wheaton and he's been struggling lately also...

Don't get me wrong, I love him and he will be good.

However, what you're missing is that those stat lines are along the lines of 3 catches on 11 targets. That was an actual game for him. He also can't block and has had penalty issues.

My favorite description of him, courtesy of Rotoworld: "He makes the tough stuff look easy, and the easy stuff look hard"

Sound familiar to anyone?

I'd take Shazier over Benjamin in a heartbeat. We can't just stack our offense and let our defense rot away due to lack of talent. We've all seen how poorly Sean Spence has played since coming back. The drop off from Shazier to Spence has been considerable.

The whole "we should've taken Benjamin" thing reeks of panic. We need to use the Pro Bowl talent we already have on offense.
