Default Re: NFL Salary Cap to Rise 5% to 130 Million

Levi is Instant Cap Relief

By Ed Bouchette Pittsburgh Post-Gazettegency!

Some stuff:

--- Remember that trade the Steelers made with the Arizona Cardinals for Levi Brown? Also remember that it did not cost them anything because Brown wasn’t on their roster longer than the one game in which he was hurt warming up. So the Steelers have six of their draft picks (minus the third-rounder in the trade with Cleveland last year), plus whatever compensatory picks the NFL gives them. There also is the as-yet unresolved matter of whether the NFL will snatch a pick away from them for Mike Tomlin’s Baltimore two-step.

--- The Steelers should easily get into salary cap compliance by March 11 by releasing one player, Levi Brown, who has a $6,250,000 salary for 2014. That will be erased entirely when they cut him. Remember, only the top 51 player caps count in the offseason and two sites, Sportrac and Overthecap, both have the Steelers’ top 51 at $135 million and change. With the cap reportedly increasing to $130 million to $132 million, Brown’s release will get them under it. They still will have work to do, however, in order to sign others.

A new report came out today. The cap increase is expected to be nearly 9.5% higher than last season. So that puts it into the 132-135 mil range.

Centers do not command a lot of money anyways, they can keep Pouncey for 5 mil per, tops.

That would be optimal.

And I'd drink to that.

As far as 'red flags' go, that qualifies.

A four or five year deal (or four year with option for fifth) at a 'market level' [or preferably slightly below] price is beyond reasonable.

It's still not certain that it's reasonable for this team though. The type of money he will command might not be in the Steelers best interests (at least not as the team is currently constructed).

Maybe things will become clearer after the last of the dead weight is cut and off the books, the vets restructure and the cap goes up (that is, this time next year).
he's only had 1 major injury the rest of his injuries is because we have some o-lineman who get punked around on sundays

I just believe hes here for then long term because 1. the FO believes hes the best in the game. 2. we drafted Adams, DD, & Gilbert to build around Pouncey. 3. Hes a big part of what we're doing on offense.

Munchak is going to do wonders for this o-line, Pouncey and DD have the potential to be one of the best C/OG combinations in league history.

I can't believe "Let's get rid of Pouncey" is still a discussion. It's not happening.

Pouncey isn't going anywhere. Are there red flags? Sure. There were red flags on and off the field with Harrison too, and he's one of the best defensive players we've ever had.

Pouncey is going to anchor our line for a long time. Hell, there are rumors that Mike Pouncey is available for trade for a high pick. How many of you would give up a second round pick for Mike Pouncey? I'd definitely consider it.

I wouldn't. The off the field issues are just to much for me to consider trading him. His brother is much more mature and I give the benefit of the doubt to Maurkice. Mike? Not so much and it has nothing to do with my fandom. At least Maurkice realized the mistake he had made for supporting Hernandez. Mike showed the opposite. And I want zero part of him after reading Ted Wells' report.

That's fair. You have to ask yourself how much the locker room had to do with his immature behavior, though. I mean, that situation is all kinds of fucked up. There wouldn't be any racial tension with Tomlin, and I doubt he'd act like a dickhead if he was playing with Maurkice.

But you're right, there are a lot of red flags that come with him. I do know that the Steelers wanted him and had a deal in place to get him back in the '11 draft, but the Wells report is damning of him. I don't know if he'd be that kind of person in our organization and playing with his brother though. It'd be a tough call, but that Pouncey - Pouncey - DeCastro interior just has me drooling.
