In any argument, my mantra is "don't engage in anger". Even if you don't win the argument, the other person will look/feel like an asshole.

As soon as the argument ensues, I would immediately inform my supervisor of the problem I'm having with the individual. This then puts the problem in the hands of management (it now becomes "their" problem), and then it's therefore solved pretty quickly without me making much effort. And it also makes me look good cause I get the reputation of being a peace keeper and one that knows how to use the proper channels. Makes me look professional...
Anyway. That's how I would approach it.

It's all about who you know.

Actually, it's what you know, too. I know my shit. Ergo, I've gotten the "damn, you're probably right" email hundreds of times.

Yep.
Remaining calm is an asset.

Even if you are right, but you are angry, all that people will remember is: "He was a jerk." Conversely, if you try to be civil, even if you are at fault, people will remember: "He tried to solve the problem."

Mine has more to do with feeling morally superior than actually being a good person, but whatever works.

I try to be my dad.

My dad never gets angry; he just solves the problem. No pointing fingers, no assigning blame, no wasting time on minutia... he always redirects any conversation towards solving the problem.

It's amazing to watch him in action.
