Default Marvel Universe coming to an end?

By Joshua YehlThe Marvel Universe as you know it will be coming to an end.

Today at a live press event at Midtown Comics in New York City moderated by Marvel PR man Chris D’Lando, Marvel Comics’ Executive Editor Tom Brevoort and Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso announced that the Marvel Universe will smash together with the Ultimate Universe and will be replaced by Battleworld -- a mashup of many different Marvel realities.

Take a moment to compose yourself.

This huge development has been in the works for some time in Jonathan Hickman’s years-long Avengers saga. The heroes have been trying to stop a series of universe-ending “incursions” where two universes collide with one another. The inciting incident to May’s eight-part Secret Wars event will be when the heroes fail to stop the regular and Ultimate universes from crashing together. The resulting Battleworld will the Marvel Universe going forward.

“This is putting an endcap to decades of stories and starting a new era. When you see the scope of the event, [you will] see what we’re willing to do. This is a place where we’re going to be bringing new pieces onto the board and taking old pieces off. You guys will be yelling and screaming, loving and hating in equal measure,” Alonso said.

It was clarified that Battleworld will be the Marvel Universe during, through, and after Secret Wars. None of this is an Elseworlds, What If, or any other kind of alternate reality -- it’ll be the setting for in-continuity stories that will all count going forward.

Late last year, there were a batch of teaser images harkening back to big Marvel events and such, and during the press conference it was revealed that each of those teasers will be a new comic book series. However, those are just the tip of the iceberg. Many new comics will be announced within the next two weeks, both ongoing series and limited.

In addition, D’Lando said that Marvel will be partnering with the likes of Hasbro, Funko, UpperDeck, and more to make new products to get fans excited for Secret Wars. He also mentioned that the Marvel games team will be coming up with some new “interactive content” for fans. Could a Secret Wars video game be on the horizon?

For those wanting to read Secret Wars, Marvel will be releasing a free Secret Wars #0 comic on May 3rd’s Free Comic Book Day that will act as a primer to get you ready for the event. Both Secret Wars #1 and #2 will be released in May, written by Hickman with art by Esad Ribic.

Default Re: Marvel Universe coming to an end?

After months of speculation, it's now official! The Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe will both come to an end during Secret Wars, with the end result being a rebooted Marvel Universe incorporating elements of both. It's all quite confusing, but here's what we do know.

The first issue of Secret Wars will feature the collision of the 616 and Ultimate Marvel Universes, with both getting destroyed and a Battleworld left which is made up of many different worlds. That will see the launch of several different limited and ongoing series' set in this reality, many of which will be those bizarre teasers we saw on a daily basis some time ago. At the end, we will apparently be left with a new Marvel Universe. It appears as if that will be the "All-New Marvel" we heard about last year, and while the history of the characters will remain in place, this soft reboot will change things a great deal as the likes of Peter Parker and Miles Morales share the same world.

We had to see this coming of course. The Fantastic Four are in the process of being done away with, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are no longer mutants, Wolverine is dead, and the X-Men could be next to go. Marvel have remained cryptic in their comments, so whether the new Marvel Universe moving forwards will be this Battleworld mashup or something else altogether isn't 100% clear, but the one which has existed since 1961 is at end regardless. What do you guys think?

Marvel Announces The End Of The Classic Marvel Universe & The Ultimate Universe As Part Of SECRET WARS

By Eric Diaz on January 20, 2015

Well, Marvel promised an “announcement to end all announcements” last week, and they delivered on that promise. At a press conference at Midtown Comics in New York City, presented as the “Secret Wars Kick-Off”, Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso and executive editor Tom Brevoort confirmed months of speculation that the eight-issue series Secret Wars will represent the end of not only the Ultimate Universe (which we knew was coming), but also the classic Earth-616 Marvel Universe, effectively ending some fifty plus years of continuity. Tom Brevoort didn’t mince words in a tweet that coincided with the event either:

Brevoort further elaborated at the Kick-Off event: “The Ultimate Universe, the Marvel Universe, they’re going to slap together. Imagine two pizzas: They’re going to combine toppings, some toppings are going to drop off. It’s more than the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe, it’s all the universes you can imagine. That is the Marvel Universe going forward; Battleworld is the melting world from which the new Marvel Universe will be fermented; various characters will live their lives, and contend with this new situation, and set up all the building blocks and the bedrock of what the new Marvel Universe will be going forward.”

Of course, Marvel also took time to mention the plethora of licensed tie-ins for Secret Wars as well – Hasbro, Diamond Select, Mighty Fine, Funko, Hot Wheels and Marvel’s game division. Nothing says “big deal event” like tons of product. After all, that was the driving force behind the original 1984 Secret Wars.

We still don’t really know what this means — is it a total continuity reboot, like DC’s New 52 was three years ago? Will the end result of Secret Wars be an all-new beginning for the Marvel Universe, with a fifteen year old Peter Parker, Xavier alive and well running his school, and all those classic stories being retold again? Marvel’s continuity has never been the cluster$%&@ that DC’s was, so in a way this is a bit of surprise, despite the months of rumors it was happening.

Or is this going to be something totally different? It seems the concept of “Battleworld” in the Secret Wars series has various versions of classic Marvel characters from different continuities and points in time co-existing, (interestingly enough, much like DC’s upcoming Convergence series) but I can’t imagine that’ll be the set up for the Marvel Universe going forward. Or is it? I supposed we’ll find out soon. As always, more details as they become available.

For further analysis on what this means for the future of Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stay tuned for tomorrow’s episode of Nerdist News.

Apparently there will be no mutants at all. The Fantastic 4, and XMen are going to disappear all together. Never been much into the 4, but it's going to be weird with no Wolverine, Prof X, Magneto, etc.....The new BattleWorld map does have an area called Sentinel Territories though. Guess if you ever thought about jumping back in, May would be a great time to start.

I guess, technically this is the end of Deadpool as well.
