Default Malaysian Airlines flight over Ukraine shot down?

Holy s**t

An adviser to Ukraine’s Interior Minister says a Malaysian passenger plane carrying 295 people has been shot down over a town in the east of the country.

Anton Gerashenko says on his Facebook page the Boeing 777 plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) when it was hit Thursday by a missile fired from a Buk launcher.

Why would the pilot decide flying over a war zone would be a good idea?

To save fuel and $$$?

The route the Malaysian plane was on, between Kuala Lumpur and the Netherlands, is a common one, CNN aviation safety consultant Mary Schiavo said Thursday. She said that the plane was flying over a troubled area and that close communication with air traffic controllers would be a key necessity.

In hostile or disputed areas, "any alteration from your course, and you can have a problem," she said.

the news was saying that at the 30,000 ft cruising altitude, this route has never been or wasnt seen as a problem for potential tragedy.

Of course given who may have access to surface to air missiles that problem is a nightmare waiting to happen lots of places

The Ukrainian "separatists" (aka Putin's stooges) claim their missiles cannot get to 30K feet

Andrei Purgin, deputy prime minister of the Donetsk People’s Republic, the insurgent group in eastern Ukraine, denied in a telephone interview that the rebels had anything to do with the downing of the passenger jet. He said the rebels had shot down Ukrainian planes before but that their anti-aircraft weapons could only reach to around 4,000 meters, far below the level of passenger jets.

“We don’t have the technical ability to hit a plane at that height,” he said. He said the plane apparently came down in an area of Ukrainian military operations and that it was not out of the question that Ukrainians themselves shot it down.

They need to get the details straight. First I hear FL 210 (not a cruising altitude for a B777), you guys are saying FL 300 (still low) and now the radio is saying FL 330 which is closer to what I'd expect (FL 350).

Plus, does the Ukraine own operate any military aircraft?

Seriously.

How many times does this need to be proven to be a bad idea?

For the record, if this somehow turns into a US political debate, it's because of a the self-fulfilling prophecy above.

33,000 feet

The FlightStats website showed the last recorded position of Flight 17 over Ukraine, west of the Russia border, at about 9:20 a.m. ET.

Yep - The Ukrainians claim one was shot down by the Russians in the past several days - might have contributed to some itchy trigger fingers in the neighborhood

The Ukrainian government said on Thursday that a Russian military plane had shot down a Ukrainian fighter jet in Ukrainian airspace the previous evening, a serious allegation of direct intervention by Russia’s armed forces.
