EdB has my thoughts exactly on Ike, no depth so I think he will be back another year while we groom his drafted replacement. It is unfortunate, but the only other option is to get a FA CB to replace Ike. It is a good plan especially if we can come to lower terms on Troy as well. I just hope Worilds is not another Woodley after this contract!

What would the cap hit be of cutting like then signing him to a one year vet minimum deal?

A very thorough and concise explanation of the scenario but there is no way in hell that the FO will give Worilds a 60 million dollar long term contract. If so, then what's the point of this transition tag? It's used to let him test the market and for the brass to get a fair long term price for him. He's the top 3-4 edge rusher currently available but there's no way a team will go past what the Browns did for Kruger a year ago. I think a more suitable 30-35 million deal is far more likely, over paying would be 40+ million max. Guaranteed money and bonus/incentives will be the biggest issue. I'd give him a bonus for playing in 13+ games as a deterrent to being somewhat "soft" in my opinion.

Worilds wants to test his value on the open market. The Steelers want to keep their options open by being able to match, but do not want to pay the non-exclusive franchise tag number for that option.

Like I've said, I hope that I'm wrong. I hope Worilds stays healthy, and has 16 sacks this upcoming season.
From what I understand, if Worilds were to leave in free agency after the transition tag, we don't get any compensation for him. The tag ensures that we have the opportunity to sign him to an equal deal which was offered elsewhere. Compensatory picks are handed out to teams that lose a player in free agency as it was deemed (not always correctly, mind you) that they were not given the opportunity to retain the player.

The transition tag is a fickle thing.

Just saw a tweet Troy won't take pay cut or restructure today and intends on getting his 10 million. This handcuffsus in FA and other moves. Woodley likely June cut. Ike probably gone. Not in favor of paying Worilds 9.75 million...hopefully they can reach a deal.

What would the cap do if we were to trade woodley? At least get something for him...that's saying if we can come to terms on a long term deal with worilds.

Steelers are stuck with $4.9 million against the 2014 cap in dead money for Ike Taylor's amortized signing bonus under any circumstances other than extending Ike (which they presumably are not nuts enough to do with a player in steep decline).

Any cap savings are up to $7 million (release him) or whatever reduced salary he takes for 2014 below his current $7 million salary
