Default Re: Jason Worilds Signs Transition Contract For 2014

Hi Teegre,

I've actually got Cliff down with 9.5 sacks the year before he signed, not 7. However I'd still argue JW has had a more successful contract year (I never said career stats, just 'year'), and thus interest in his services.

Also Cliff and his agent turned down a 3/40mil deal, with DET prior to signing with SEA. So his signing of 2/15mil shows the dis-interest and/or market value for him at the time.

Not sure you can really suggest 6-7mil as a realistic value for JW this year in an open market. Even if you placed Cliff as the going rate at that time, time's moved on, the salary cap has risen, there's few proven rushers on the open market currently, and even fewer 26 year old proven rushers.

There's no way Byrd would have come here for the price that we will ultimately sign Worilds for.

So your point about the Steelers not paying $10 million to players will hold true, because they don't plan on paying Worilds that money.

And to answer your question, "no", I wouldn't pay Worilds that money as a FA from another team because it would be long-term and locked in. It is neither in this scenario.
Now that Worilds has actually signed & is negotiating, I am fine. My initial reaction was to paying Worilds $10 million.

Worilds for $10 million: bad.
Worilds for $6-7 million: good.

You just described my point (from the previous post) in different words: Cliff Avril had a higher market value, but signed for less... to be with a winning team. Kruger got paid higher than market value, because he signed with the Browns.

Worilds might be able to get $8-9 million from the Chargers (who need an OLB), or $13 million from the Browns (they suck), or only $4-5 million from the Niners (they don't need an OLB, but could use depth).

Ergo, I think that he plays for the Steelers for $6-7 million... because of a few factors: comfort with the system; no hassle of moving; and, a track-record in Pittsburgh of winning.

What we got to remember here is that Worilds has the Steelers by the short hairs. He will make 10 million guarenteed this year...extension or not. Then could be tagged again next year for guarenteed $. So I seriously doubt doubt if I was him or his agent would settle for anything less than 21 million guarenteed over the longtern because he will see that anyway if tagged the next two years. That's why he signed so fast. He can draw out negotiations as long as he wants til the deal is fair to him. No way in anyway will he take less than 21 million guarenteed. Next will Troy take a cut, I have seen tweets he won't. Likely meaning this is his last year of wanting topplay football. Ike who knows.

Like I've said, I hope that I'm wrong. I hope Worilds stays healthy, and has 16 sacks this upcoming season.
They were never going to go after Byrd and pay him upwards of 12 mil a year. Its just a bad business practice to pay someone who hasn't worked for your organization instead of the player who has put in his time. Paying top end FA's is a good way to add dissention in the locker room. The player would have to not only be a stud (is Byrd really that much of a stud? I tend to not think so) but also be a tremendous leader. Byrd does not come off as the leader type by any means to me, but I admittedly haven't heard too many stories about him nor I have I heard him talk all that much.

I could be wrong about the player, but not about the business practice.
