Steelers use transition tag on Jason Worilds
Posted by Darin Gantt on March 3, 2014, 4:03 PM EST

After the transition tag sat dormant for so long, it has been used twice in the last hour.

The Steelers named outside linebacker Jason Worilds their transition player, the team announced.

That guarantees Worilds, who wasn’t even a full-time starter last year, a one-year deal worth $9.754 million. The franchise tag would have cost $11.455 million.

Worilds had value after registering 8.0 sacks last year, but his side and the Steelers couldn’t agree on what it was.

Now, he can go to the market, and the Steelers have the opportunity to match any deal he finds, though there’s no compensation if they don’t.

The transition tag effectively dares the agent to find a contract. If the Steelers don’t elect to match, they’ll just return their gaze to 2013 first-rounder Jarvis Jones, whose rookie year went in fits and starts.

I'm... shocked.

This means Ike Taylor is as good as gone.

The front office has to do something to compensate for this move. He can get 10-11 million a year easy. Imo I'd rather keep woodley, let him walk, and give jarvis another year. Cut some of the true weight instead of adding onto it. And extend/restructure the ones that are necessary.

The crappy part about all of this is that we still won't know if he's going to be with the team until the free agency signing period ends. Which also means we don't know if Woodley will be with the team.

We still have just as many questions today as we did yesterday.....maybe more.

Don't they know I have a draft to prepare for?

This can also backfire heavily against the Steelers as this means we don't get any compensation if he were to leave in free agency. The Steelers think he's going to be the future at OLB and are trying everything they can, short of the franchise tag, to keep him.

Im not a fan, but I don't see how you can be pissed. This is what they always do: let the market set his value. Somebody will put a $12 million bonus on him this year, and he'll be gone. If teams aren't as interested, he'll bring back a reasonable deal.

OLB isn't all about getting sacks you know cause lets not forget that he was a GREAT run defender this year(reminded me of Harrison). He's one of the reason why our defense got better at the end of the season. And he produced while getting doubled teamed.

People acting like he is a scrub smh. Keeping a injured proned Woodley and drafting an OLB and hoping he turns out good or better than Worilds or Woodley will lead to more 8-8 seasons. This isn't madden. We drafted Worilds to replace Harrison(now Woodley) when we drafted him in the 2nd round and then he finally got PT and produced and now we want him gone? That's something the Browns do

Worilds was "one" of best players on Defense last year and deserves to be brought back.
