Default Re: Jason Worilds Given Transition Tag

An explanation for why to use the transition tag after Browns used it on Alex Mack this afternoon

It also allows the market to set Mack's worth. Maybe his camp thinks he's worth more than the Browns are willing to pay. By allowing other teams to negotiate, there won't be any confusion.

Of course there is a downside to using transition rather than franchise tag

The problem for the Browns, though, is that a team in desperate need of a center could be willing to pay Mack a sum the Browns wouldn't. (In related news: The Browns are in desperate need of a center.)

If Worilds goes, Steelers can go with Woodley for another year. But if Worilds is gone Steelers presumably will not have as much leverage to get Woodley to take a cut.

It may come down to the Steelers and/or Worilds being delusional about his market value

I actually like this. It makes me think they will try to get a good OLB in the draft (I know it is thin, but I can be hopeful) to replace either Worilds or Woodley, so we either keep Worilds for one more year or he gets a big contract elsewhere and we keep Woodley with the replacement learning for one year. In 2 years we have JJ and the new OLB as our rushing tandem for the forseeable future.

Yeah I know, wishful thinking!

I do not think the Heath Miller deal gets them there

Ike Taylor should be spell checking his resume

Now I'm very conflicted here. Sure he produced for...8 games, but he doesn't deserve such a fat contract. We have far more needs and could've used the money to sign someone else, I was thinking Shields. Then again, the FO knows more than any of us so we'll see what happens this year. I'm expecting 12+ sacks this year, with 4 forced fumbles, and 2 interceptions. Anything less I will be disappointed with that much money.

Mike Prisuta @DVEMike:

GM Kevin Colbert's offseason comments have suggested Steelers' intent is to keep Jason Worilds. Tag buys time, insurance for $9.754 million.

People need to let the Byrd thing go, there is no way we were going to get him. I rather have Worlids than Woodley even if we are overpaying. Heres to hoping we are all eating crow when Worlids and Jones combine for 20+ sacks next year.

DL must like this dude. Worilds knows this defense, been part of it for a few years now, and clearly outplayed Woodley last year, (like a certain CB who outplayed Ike that we should've kept, but that's for another thread) I don't see how you NOT try hard to bring him back. I know we have other needs, and I know the Steelers feel on defense that they have 99 problems, but LOLB ain't one...HIT ME!

Sign Worilds and address other defense needs in this deep draft and free agency. Last year, I heard his name called ALOT which means he was constantly making plays. Gotta keep a guy like that!

Another interesting aspect of the transition tag is that other teams won't be able to start negotiating with Worilds until the 22nd, Steelers might be betting the big spenders will be less inclined to outbid them and risk missing out on guys like Byrd and Shields

ID LIKE Shaquille Barret in the 4th or 5th. Joey porter coached him to a monster season last year. I gotta believe joey has put this kid on the Steelers Radar.
