Very true.

Or, he plays out this deal... while a later-round prospect is developed... and Worilds leaves next year.

But, even if he wants as much as $12 million, it would only be $2.25 million more than Worilds. And, Byrd is easy better than a mere "$2.25 million more than Worilds."

Think about it this way, using two totally different players:
Let's say that the Chargers are about to lose Ryan Mathews to free agency. Mathews has been often injured, and only really produced for the last half of the past season. Now, for whatever reason, Megatron is available... for only $2.25 million more than Mathews.

Who do you sign?

One is an often injured player who "could" be top ten at his position... and the other is easily one of the two best at his respective position.

If Worilds signs with another team, so be it.
If he signs for $6.5 million per year, so be it.
If he plays one year, and then leaves, so be it.

BUT, if he signs a multi-year deal worth $8 million (or more) per season... ugh. That much money would have been far better served on a proven player: Byrd.
Teegre, on the surface, this looks like a bad move by the Steelers. However, it could be a blessing in disguise as Pittsburgh is now forced to cut some players Woodley/Ike Taylor etc who need to be cut. The transition to younger quicker defense with more upside could then begin in earnest.

Cut
Levi Brown: -6.25

Restructure
Heath (or extend, whatever we find out happened): -2 to 4
Brown: -2 to 4
Timmons: -2 to 4

BOOM. There's your cap space. Then move on to dealing with guys like Ike. Either you cut Woodley post June 1st if you sign Worilds, or you're off the hook for his tag and that money signs your picks and goes towards extensions.

Kicking the can down the road with restructurings has caused the chronic cap problems of the past several years. Ben is going to cost a lot of money fairly soon. To maintain some flexibility I think you cut Ike.

I'm sorry, but with Brown and Timmons it's not "kicking the can". They ARE the franchise for the next 4-6 years at least. If it came to the point where they had to be cut, the Steelers would be in much more trouble than the salary cap.

And with projections of the cap now ballooning upwards of $140 million and then even higher, it's the smart thing to do when these guys will be under contract anyway.

Ike can't play for $7 million. That's true. But I think he takes a little less.

I'm pissed as if he's gone, it means he gets a huge offer and the Steelers couldn't get any draft pick compensation. If teams aren't as interested, no way $9.754M is reasonable.

Jeez, this thread is getting big fast! I just wanted to say that what I'm taking out of all this is that it means the Front Orifice might have some kind of plan, and they're paying attention.. You know, unlike the Clowns FO, who seem like they just have daily keg parties, and throw shit at the wall.

The Steelers get compensation, the same as they do when any UFA leaves. Just not two 1st like for Jimmy Graham which no one would give up. He doesn't necessarily have to play for the tag price or equal either, a team could come back with a lower offer. He'll only get a contract that the market warrants.
