With the Steelers they have traditionally made captains out of vets who they feel have earned the right to be recognized..not the best player or the leaders of the team...its a respect for years of service type of thing.

I was wondering that myself...and if the Steelers usually choose people that have been around a while and proven themselves, is that common for other teams as well?

I beleive that is correct. They have a team vote to choose their captains.
