Default Fresh Batch is ready

Fresh Batch is ready

By Mike Prisuta
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Wednesday, September 6, 2006

Although it's never easy for a backup to fill an injured starter's shoes, the challenge confronting Charlie Batch should be less daunting than the last time he replaced Ben Roethlisberger.

"You would like to say that," Batch said. "Everything's still fresh in my head from being able to work with the first-team offense during training camp."

Last November, Batch was almost two years removed from throwing an NFL pass when he was asked to step in for Roethlisberger at Green Bay.

By the time Batch stepped under center at Lambeau Field, it had been almost four years, from Dec. 2, 2001, to Nov. 6, 2005, since his last NFL start.

Batch was rusty against the Packers. The following week against the Browns, he was much better.

The key, Batch believes, was preparation.

"More and more reps," he said.

Batch has been getting plenty of those this week in advance of Thursday night's opener at Heinz Field against the Miami Dolphins.

Because Roethlisberger was hospitalized at the outset of the Steelers' work week in preparation for the Dolphins, and because this is the season opener rather than the home stretch, Batch steps in picking up where he left off rather than shaking off the rust.

At Steelers' practices, the No. 1 quarterback runs the No. 1 offense almost exclusively. The backup gets one series Friday and "a couple of plays scattered throughout the course of the week," Batch said.

The No. 3 QB gets what's left over -- if anything's left over.

Batch, the No. 3 QB at the outset of the 2005 season, prepared as the starter in advance of the Packers game a year ago, but it was his first significant work since August. And he was coming off a 2004 season spent on injured reserve.

Against Green Bay, he completed 9 of 16 passes for just 65 yards. Few of his throws were downfield. The second time he tried to hit a wide receiver rather than a tight end or a back, Batch was intercepted.

The Steelers won the game, but Batch emerged with a passer rating of 39.8.

Batch was masterful the following week against Cleveland. He completed 13 of 19 first-half attempts for 150 yards, hooking up with wide receivers 10 times (as opposed to twice the week before). And he brought the Steelers back from a 7-0 deficit with 17 second-quarter points, finishing off the last scoring drive of the quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Batch broke his hand on the play, but he did so with a passer rating of 92.0.

And the Steelers won the game.

"Those were critical games," Batch said. "I was able to come in and kinda get those wins. Guys in this locker room feel comfortable with that happening."

They're also encouraged knowing Batch is weeks -- rather than months -- removed from the steady workload that training camp demands.

"To me, he's had a great preseason," fullback Dan Kreider said. "He's played a decent amount, because Ben didn't play a whole lot (four series in three preseason games).

"I think (Batch) is ready to go."

Physically and mentally.

"You always prepare as a starter," Batch said. "But when you're in that situation where you're not getting many reps and then you're thrown in there, you're trying to make it up all at once. The natural reaction is to try to make things happen too quickly as opposed to letting things develop.

"It's totally different now than it was then."

Well he knows our system and he's had the past three days to get prepped and ready. As long as he doesn't lose the game for us, we will be fine.

DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-FENSE.

I have a friend who told me this morning, "The dolphins are going to run a batch all over Charlie." Yeah, I know, there's no accounting for some people's taste in football teams. But he is a local boy and has been a Phins fan since childhood.

It's going to be interesting as we're watching the game at his house. The last time we watched the Dolphins/Steelers game, a hurricane blew through Miami and he left the stadium with just over 6 minutes to go in the game.

I'll be wating for him to walk out his front door tomorrow night!

HERE WE GO STEELERS HERE WE GO!!!

Batch will be ready to go. He has had 3 good days of practice this week and everything is in place for him to have a good game. He doesn't necessarily have to play great just good. I think the rest of the team will pick up the slack.

Charlie will do a good job of managing the game and not making a big mistake that could cost us the game.
