Default Steelers Defensive Depth Going into the Draft

Steelers' Defensive Depth going into the draft, with thoughts on some draft picks.

* Guys I really like.

DEFENSIVE LINE------------TOP 3 PICK w/ late and UDFAs later

Cameron Heyward-the best one of the bunch
Steve McClendon -would he be better as an end?
Cam Thomas -Could hold the point at DE, but can he get to the outside? Underachiever so far.
Brian Arnfelt -promising but who knows?
Nick Williams -Curious to see develop.
Hebron Fangupo -age 28 so it's now or never. Alameda Ta'amu 3 starts in Arizona but only 7 tackles.
Al Lapuaho - 6-3 284lbs. 2.0 sacks in 26-game career. Steelers specializing in signing guys with lousey stats lately.

Depending on how much the Steelers believe in Arnfelt and Williams this may be by far the most critical area of need for the team. Should draft high and probably even take two lineman and many more as UDFAs. A Quality NT could allow McClendon to move outside.

Early---1-3 rounds

Ra'Shede Hageman DE Minnesota 6-6 310. -if trade down in first occurs to bottom of round.
*Louis Nix NT Notre Dame 6-2 331. Would be a 2nd round Gift! Not at 15 in the first though.
*Stephon Tuitt DE Notre Dame 6-5 304. -If he could be there in the 2nd round!
*Daniel McCullers DE/ NT Tennessee 6-7 352. Massive can play all over line. Weight in future could be a problem. Like him!

Mid to late----(all need work to be at NFL level)

*Brent Urban DE Virginia 6-7 295 -4th -5th speed, athleticism Great 4-5th round pick. Maybe a future Aaron Smith.
DaQuan Jones DE/NT Penn State 6-4 322. - if he fell to late 3rd.
Kelcy Quarles DE South Carolina 6-4 297.
DeAndre Coleman DE 6-5 314.
Taylor Hart DE Oregon 6-6 281 -lots of questions on how or if he can develop. Compared to Keisel(high praise)
Justin Ellis, NT, Louisiana Tech Height: 6-1. Weight: 334 Not high on. Pedestrian production, rotated often.
*Shamar Stephen Connecticut DE 6-5 309. Late 6th-7th. Strong.

Beau Allen NT 6-2 333. visited team. 30 on the bench. 7th-UDFA
Ryan Carrethers NT, Arkansas State 6-1 337. 32 on the bench 7th -UDFA
Mister Cobble NT Kentucky 6-0 340 UDFA
-Counted another 8 NT type guys who could go undrafted.

Jason Worilds -You got the money this year. Prove it for next year.
Jarvis Jones -2nd year. No excuses.
Chris Carter -Relative of Claude Raines (aka The Invisible Man) Please GET HIM OFF THE TEAM!
Arthur Moats -could he surprise at OLB? only 5 career NFL sacks though. Probably better on the inside.
Vic So'oto - 6-3 263. 35 on the bench. 14 NFL games w/4 teams. 1 sack. Last chance will be here.

If Anthony Barr is sitting there at 15 will they pull the trigger or use it to trade down with another team? My biggest worry is drafting a OLB in the 2nd may cost us finding a true star at WR or impact DL in the late 3rd with comp pick. Lock up Worilds and find a developmental guy later may be the way to go.

Dee Ford slipping to 2nd round. Some don't like him at all. All mouth. Not sure would take the risk.
Scott Crighton -seems like perfect Steeler. Motor that never quits. launches himself. Still some weakness in game.
Marcus Smith - 14.5 sacks high. 40 tackles low. 2nd rounder may be too risky for Steelers.
DeMarcus Lawrence -visited team but probably gone by 3rd round and has some weaknesses. Can't see it.
*Trevor Reilly Utah 6-5 245 Tackling Machine w/ 100 last year. 9 sacks. 3rd round comp? 4.66 -40 26 on the bench.
Jaskson Jeffcoat -visited Steelers, a few warning signs. Injury prone, tweener. from Texas. 13 sacks last year though. 3rd

Mid to Late------
Devon Kennard 6-3 249 Developmental guy that played OLB, ILB, DE for USC. 9 sacks last year. 4.62 -40 5th round
Prince Shembo 6-1 253 Always playing at full effort with his hair on fire. 6-7th
Shaquil Barrett 6-1 251 -The Joey Porter connection has everyone talking about drafting him, but 7th or UDFA can get him here.
*Morgan Breslin USC -some serious injuries to recover from. 17.5 sacks in two years. Practice Squad for the future? UDFA

Lawrence Timmons
Vince Williams -could be better but....
Sean Spence -if healthy still needs to get up to NFL speed. Might surprise. Still can be manhandled by OL though.
Kion Wilson -Failed at chance to be "The Guy" last year.
Terence Garvin -always thought of him more as a OLB in camp last year. Seems to be around the ball.
Dan Molls -you will notice this guy in camp for his energizer bunny hustle to the ball. could surprise a little.

Every time Charlie Casserly talks about CJ Mosley he then states, "multiple pro-bowler". Would it be a shock to see them pull the trigger? If they traded down and he was there? Ryan Shazier bottom of first in trade down? Chris Borland in the 2nd? I believe they will give Spence and Williams a change to excel in their now veteran years and avoid ILB until a little later in the draft.

Mid round options--------
Shayne Skov - 3-4th 109 tackles, 5.5 sacks no INT last year.
Yawin Smallwood 5-6th 118 tackles, 4 sacks 1 INT last year.
Kevin Pierre-Louis -visited team 4.46 speed 6-1 232lbs 5-6th round 108 tackles 6 sacks, 1 INT.

Troy Polamalu
Mike Mitchell
Will Allen
Shamarko Thomas
Robert Golden
Ross Ventrone
Jordan Dangerfield -gets no respect, no respect. (if you get that joke you've been around awhile)

The Steelers drafting a Safety in one of the first two rounds would indicate a belief that Shamarko Thomas is better suited as a nickle corner(very plausible) or a 3rd safety on the field for the future. With guys like Calvin Pryor or Deone Bucannon available that would probably be good thinking. The 2014 3rd round pick Shamarko cost us better indicate he is something.

Can only think of two guys I like past Pryor and Bucannon----------
Brock Vereen -visited team 3-4th round 4.45 40 time. only 4 career ints.
Dion Bailey -USC 5 INTs last year.

Ike Taylor -6-2" The Swan Song tour for Ike.
Cortez Allen -6-1" did not exactly seize the moment last year. Still weak against the run.
William Gay 5-10"- Is Gay a fine wine. Getting better with age?
Brice McCain 5-9" -drafted in '09. 4.33 40 time. Rated worst CB in league last year. 3 college INTs. 5 in NFL.
Antwon Blake 5-9" -his 40 low was 4.22 Can he get it together and be something? 1 career INT at El Paso.
Isaiah Green 5-10" -another speed guy 4.40 -40. Also 1 college career INT. Do the Steelers find these guys deliberately?
Devin Smith 5-11" 4.44 40 time. Been around league since 2012. No career stats.

Steelers seem to be going after speed in their CBs from roster above. Also they don't shy away from short guys either. Makes you think they won't shy away from taking Jason Verrett in first round. CB is a need so take two. One high, one almost high.

Round 1
Justin Gilbert -Be there and I'll have my David DeCastro moment all over again.(leaping higher then I've ever leaped)
Darqueze Dennard -This guy is solid. Some talk about average, but has hands for INTs, tough guy, a thorn in receiver's sides.
Kyle Fuller - Mayock's number 1 guy. Zone CB with press ability, but beaten often in off man coverage.
Jason Verrett- -best cover corner and would be NFL's best slot CB, but can he handle the 6-5 guys? Late first trade down pick?
Bradley Roby -Don't touch with a 1 mile long pole.

Round 2-3 (think there is a huge drop off here enough to warrant a round 1 pick at CB being a priority)

Keith McGill 6-3 211. 4.44 40 time. Wow. Is this the future of the NFL CB? Still size creates some weaknesses in game.
Phillip Gaines Rice 6-0 193. Small School. Projected 2nd round. Visited team. 4.31 40 time. 4 picks. Needs some work.
Jaylen Watkins 6-0 194. 4.41 speed. Position flexibility. Not a lot of picks.

Round 4-7
*EJ Gaines Missouri -the "Gaines" I like a lot. Held and frustrated Mike Evans to 4 rec for 8 yrds. Would love in the 4th.
Aaron Colvin Oklahoma -Major Knee injury will slide him down. Take the chance in 6th for a future player? This year IR.
Ross Cockrell Duke -12 INTs in career. Weak in run game. would prefer EJ Gaines of the SEC. 5th round would take a chance.
Shaquille Richardson Arizona visited team. 4.43 speed. 6-0" 194. 10 Career INTs. A must pick in 6-7th.

Any thoughts and suggested players to pick would be appreciated and add to our enjoyment of the draft. Thank you.
