Default Richard Sherman Signs 4 year, $57.4 Million Dollar Extension With Seattle

Richard Sherman, Seahawks strike $57.4M extension

By Gregg Rosenthal
Around The League Editor

The Seattle Seahawks continue to make news, and it has nothing to do with the NFL draft.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that the Seahawks and Richard Sherman struck a four-year contract that made the All-Pro the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, according to a source informed of the situation.

Sherman said the extension is four years for a total of $57.4 million with $40 million guaranteed.

The story comes two weeks after the Seahawks wrapped up a four-year, $40 million contract with Earl Thomas that made him the highest-paid safety in the league.

Sherman, a 2011 fifth-round pick, began calling himself the best cornerback in football a few years ago. And he's backed up all the talk with physical man coverage and a penchant for the big moment.

The Seahawks have gone against conventional wisdom by building a historically great defense from the outside in. While the team's defensive line is terrific, their stars are in the secondary. Thomas and Sherman are the best at what they do, and they are paid like it now. Safety Kam Chancellor also received a long-term deal last year, and cornerback Byron Maxwell could be the group's next Pro Bowl player.

The Seahawks mostly stayed quiet in free agency, and this is the reason why. They had to take care of their young foundation pieces. Next on their to-do list will be a big extension for Russell Wilson next offseason.

The Legion of Boom -- and the rest of this young Seahawks team -- is not going away.

That's two down... who will they have to let go of, in order to stay under the cap.

Strike now, Seattle... because, like all successful teams know, cap hell is coming.

Chancellor is likely next.

I don't see how they retain Wagner and Irvin, especially while they have to resign both Wilson and Chancellor still.

Lynch is one (1.5 dead cap hit vs. 9.0 cap hit), so really it only leaves one more.

Cliff Avril comes off their books after this year, too. There's 7M more gone.

Okung's cap hit goes down for them next year (from 11.2 to 7.2).

Zach Miller is fairly expendable (1.0 dead cap hit vs. 4.0 cap hit) and kickers like Steven Hauschka are fungible (1.65 dead cap hit vs. 3.325 cap hit).

Not sure how much of that 8.5 M in current dead money rolls over to next year.

So, doing some math... 7.5 + 7 + 4+ 3 + 1.625 + 8.5 = 31.625 M freed up by letting those guys go (and letting Okung's current deal play out).

Factor in the dead cap money of 1.5 + 1 + 1.65 = 4.15 M

That's still 27.5 M net cap gain, or about the boost in deals for Sherman, Thomas and Bennett.

It's not as bad as it seems: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/seattle-seahawks/yearly/

Also, does this extension kick in this or next year? Either way, just like Earl Thomas and even Percy Harvin, it's probably structured quite well (with 'outs').

If any of those guys start to degrade by 2017, their dead cap hit will be minimal.

So they still have a roughly three year window to vie for championships.

Plus, consider that Pittsburgh's 'cap hell' these last two years was primarily punctuated by injuries. That is, they were a playoff-caliber team done in by injuries. After 2010 they still had a three year window to chase Lombardis (and that was after their third trip to Lombardi land when Troy and Ben and Hines and others were already getting paid).

Unless egos get in the way, Seattle shouldn't see a decline in overall team performance until 2015 or 2016.

That's the one that's going to cause them trouble.

@NSMaster56
That Super Bowl is going to make him a lot of money. 6 year, 115 sounds right. It's hard to make a deal like that cap friendly.

I just hope that the Steelers can land Bobby Wagner.

That's a lot of speed with Spence in the middle of our defense.
