Default Spence Updates?

Anyone have any Spence updates from the OTA's? I am of course assuming he is attending them. I am just curious as there are articles about Shazier sitting in the starting spot already.

From ESPN.com today:

•Rookie Ryan Shazier has been running with the first-team defense at the linebacker spot where the Steelers once envisioned Sean Spence starting. Spence is working his way back from a career-threatening knee injury and the 2012 third-round draft pick has looked good in the Steelers' first two OTAs. But neither Spence nor the Steelers will know how much he will be able to contribute this season until the grind of training camp. Spence, who is from South Florida along with Shazier, said he is willing to do anything he can to help the first-round pick with the transition to the NFL. "It's all friendly competition," Spence said. "He is trying to better himself. I am here trying to better myself. He's a hometown guy. I am just happy to be working with him."

They've got a couple shots of him on the OTA day 2 film. He looks pretty good in his backpedal. Won't know until they start hitting though, whether he's his old self. (#51)

Spence has incredible instincts and his first step is unreal. Very special.

Just check him explode off the line in drills. He ain't going anywhere without a fight.

I think between the main three of Timmons, Spence, and Shazier, plus the underrated Garvin and the solid rookie in Zumwalt, Williams should be looked at as an OLB. He's a bull and very strong. I think backing up Worilds would be a better fit all considered. This change would not surprise me in the least once Spence earns the staff's faith after a week or so of contact. And Garvin ain't no slouch. He would have certainly been drafted had his knee surgery not destroyed his senior year. This dude is way better than most think.

I see the Steelers as loaded inside. I think Williams would be a great fit outside as a backup.

I have a good feeling that Spence isn't going to make things easy for Shazier and that the coaching staff will have a difficult decision to make (who starts?).

Shazier is more talented, but Spence has those football instincts that can't be coached, it will be a very interesting battle between them imo. Can't wait

He's unanimously the best player on the defense, obviously.

It's a nice story but let's not pretend that he's going to be the same player he was before his knee got obliterated.

Good post, I was actually considering making a thread about the possibility of Williams transitioning to OLB.

Williams isn't going to transition to OLB because he already has below average speed for an inside linebacker. He's in the perfect spot in this defense; a sub-role two down thumper whose deficiencies can be masked by scheming.
