What helps the 2000 Ravens case is that their offense was sooooo bad.

In their first nine games the Ravens allowed a mere 10.9 ppg, but scored only 15.5. They started 5-4.

They really did need their D to play out of their minds.

Everyone gauges QBs on their Super Bowls, why not defenses? Why does a single season matter as much for a defense as an entire career does for a QB?

It's the '70s Steelers. They did it four times.

Are you sure about that?

Yes, the 2000 Ravens wasn't very good on Offense, but when Dilfer came in, they played just well enough for them to not lose. Nothing to take away from their D of course. It's still incredible.

If you go by one season, the 1976 Steelers were the best by far. Less than 10 points a game, five shutouts, that's right, five shutouts. 22 total points during an 8 game span. Playing in the superior AFC at the time. Bradshaw got hurt and the defense took over. They were fantastic.

Dilfer taking over at QB was a major factor of their turnaround, but until he came in their O was horrible. Their D was consistently terrific.

Check out their TOs forced per game. 15 in their last three games and 21 in their last five. 12 more during the playoffs.

Even with a problematic O the 2000 Ravens probably still win 10 games. Their D was that good.

This is probably not the best of all time, but the defense of Tampa Bay in 2002 is very underrated....This defense has given 10 TD and makes 31 interception during the regular season!

The problem for the Steelers in 1976, they have not won the Super Bowl, but for a decade, the Steelers are the best defense of all time

For a single year, the 2000 ravens are the best for me....Allowed only 188 points in 20 games, including the playoffs, this is impressive and won the Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer is unbelievable

People always bring up the bears defense all the god damn time.

The steel curtain was so great they won 4 freaking SBs. No other team has done that.
Defense that shaped a franchise. That defense was feared

for me, the 1976 Steelers defense is the greatest ever. over the final eight games of the 76 season Steelers' opponents averaged just 3.1 points a game.

however, the 1985 Bears would get my second vote as they pitched shutouts in both the NFC Divisional and Conference games and then only allowed 10 points in the Super Bowl.
