however, the 1985 Bears would get my second vote as they pitched shutouts in both the NFC Divisional and Conference games and then only allowed 10 points in the Super Bowl.

That's just it. The '76 team was probably the best of the eight year run of dominance on the defensive side of the ball, and they didn't win the Super Bowl. It's almost like the Steelers get penalized for being so great for so long.

They use this argument of deciding who was the best for one year, because when it comes down to the best defense ever assembled and playing for an extended period of years, there really is no discussion.

The Steelers defense of the '70's was the best defense ever.....period. It's not even close.

All this other stuff is just brought up to give people something to talk about, and fans of other teams something to brag about. They're just trying to throw other franchises a bone.

When I think of the "woulda's, coulda's, and should'ves" related to the 70's Steelers this one still sticks in my craw.

The 76 defense was probably the best of the bunch and how they finished the season boggles the mind (22 points over 8 games, 5 shutouts.......).

I still get sick to my stomach thinking about Franco and Rocky unable to contribute and just standing on the sidelines.

We'd be going for ring #8 this year.

Why isn't the 2009 steeler's defense ever mentioned in the greatest ever? Hard schedule in NFL history, actually played against legit offenses and beat them up. Greatest play in superbowl history?

just saying

My top 3 are the '76 Steelers, the "00 Ratbirds, and the '85 Bears, which order they come in largely depends on whose film I'm watching at the time. But, since I'm a Steeler fan and a proud homer, I'll go with the '76 Steelers.

The steelers defense had not been dominant in the playoffs....Of course, in regular season, the defense has been unbelievable

I' all fall back on an experts opinion

Ozzie new some played against the great steelers, bears, and giants defenses and helped assemble the SB ravens.

He says the steelers were the best. Hands down.

The '76 Steelers defense is only on this list because of Lambert's mean faces.
