Default Dejan Kovacevic leaving the Trib to start his own site

I saw on his Twitter that he's going to be leaving the Tribune-Review to start a new corporate-backed, subscription-based website called DK on Pittsburgh Sports. Supposedly the subscriptions are going to be as cheap as $1.50 per month.

I don't see how it's going to be very successful. I just can't imagine there are enough people out there who would want to pay to read his sports opinions.

Good luck to him

Some sports sites have a paywall for content in addition to the free stuff, but I cannot imagine how many folks would pay for one person's sports thoughts.

Maybe the Trib-Review did not renew his contract

Based on his tweets, it seemed like it was his decision to leave the Trib. I can't imagine they would force him out since he's won a bunch of awards for his columns and he's always on social media trying to get people to read his stuff on the Trib's website.

I saw this morning that Rob Rossi had written a column about Liriano, so I guess they're going to have columns by committee for a while until they replace DK. I know Joe Starkey does freelance columns for the Trib occasionally and his stuff is generally pretty good, but they'd have to convince him to leave his radio job if they were going to hire him as DK's replacement.

Dejans site will have 10 free article views per month to help lure subscribers.

being that it is corporate backed, i dont think he will be totally reliant on subscription fees to put food on the table.

it sounds as if he will enjoy more freedom, and to offer content in more mediums such as vids, podcasts etc.

I pay for the NYT (which throws in the paper version of the Sunday Times) and get the WSJ online as part of getting the daily paper.

I cannot imagine paying for sports online unless they really tighten up on what is out there for free (e.g. - if the Post-Gazette put all Steelers info behind a paywall). I especially cannot imagine paying for one writer.
