Default It's Time to Shut Up About Jarvis Jones

Is there any one player on these boards that is more scrutinized than Jarvis Jones? If there has been, I don't know who it is. I don't know if there is any one individual who has taken more grief since last season -- Mike Tomlin and Dick LeBeau included -- than Jarvis.

"He's too small!"

"He's a bust!"

"He needs more time in the weight room!"

"Why did we draft him so high?"

"Look at his 40 time!"

These remarks -- some more ridiculous than others -- have been regurgitated many, many times over the last 12 months. All of these remarks have been made after one season. One season. People are putting this kid up on the cross because, in their own mind, he failed to meet expectations. Nevermind the fact that anyone who actually watched film of him in college (what a concept, educating yourself on a player and then making expectations based off information) knew he'd struggle initially adjusting to the NFL level. Nevermind the fact that he actually has improved, and showed signs of what kind of player he could be in week 17 against Cleveland last season. Put aside the fact that all rookies will struggle in our defensive scheme. All of this requires ignoring basic football knowledge, common sense and reason. Even if you put all of these things aside, it's been one season.

Steelers fans are supposed to be some of the most educated in the industry. Simply put, we're supposed to know our shit. We don't panic. We don't overreact. We don't let the little things get to us. We look into the future, and most of us see a bright one. We trust there is a plan in place, and the chips will fall where they're supposed to.

Why, then, have we failed so miserably on all accounts regarding Jarvis?

"Sign Victor Butler! Jarvis is a bust!"

"Sign Jackson Jeffcoat! He's an upgrade over Jones!"

"Bring back James Harrison!"

The sad part is, this isn't the first time we've seen a player struggle initially in our defense. Lawrence Timmons and Troy Polamalu struggled in their rookie seasons as well. They struggled to grasp the defense, and often times looked out place. The game was simply too fast and the defense too complex for them in their rookie seasons.

One is now a first ballot Hall of Fame player, and the other has been the best player on our defense for three consecutive seasons.

People often forget that Joey Porter struggled in his rookie season as well. In the end, he ended up being arguably the best 3-4 Linebacker this team has ever had.

Giving up on a player because they struggle in their rookie season is beyond ludicrous. Yes, there are concerns with Jarvis and his technique, but the coaching staff has emphasized he improve in this area. And, from the early film of him thus far, he has improved. The signs are encouraging if you choose to look at them.

The worst part is this kind of thinking isn't refined to a select few of our fans. Dejan Kovacevic released an article today eloquently entitled "What’s so ‘special’ about Jarvis Jones?".

I implore all Steelers fans to take a collective breath and step back. Take a look at the bright future of Jarvis Jones instead of looking at his struggles early in his rookie season.

Jarvis Jones was responsible for cousin Oliver joining the Brady Bunch.

Steelers fans tend to lack any kind of perspective. It comes with having the most super bowls.

Completely agree that Jarvis needs to be given time, but also agree that there are legitimate concerns. Just not enough for people to want him replaced.

Good post

SteelerCanada wasnt around for Willie Gay circa 2009. That critisizm makes the Jarvis Jones critisizm look timid.

so what steelers defenders have started more that 1 year in lebeaus system?

polamalu - yes
taylor- yes
timmons - yes

allen- no 2nd year starter
mcclendon - 2nd year starter

heyward - no (almost 2nd year starter)
jones- no
shazier- no
worilds- no
mitchell - no
tuitt- no (mccullers/thomas- no)

sub package players gay and keisel- yes

rewind to our last superbowl, where just about every starter had atleast 3-5 years experience in dick lebeaus system.

not only do people need to shut up about rookies and sophmores, they need to shut up about dick lebeau not getting it as well. its the young and new players who havent grasped it yet. there is a natural learning curve and it is exasberated when everyone is thrown into the fire all at once.

Good post
They just really don't understand how the draft works at all. And it's very, very frustrating. It's easy to pick Aldon Smith when you pick in the top 5 for a decade. Not all first rounders are created equal.

But, he was a high draft pick. He needs to produce or else was a bust. He hasn't shown anything so far in his 2nd Training camp or preseason games.

While I do want JH back, it is only for depth as our depth is not the best at OLB and I would like him to retire a Steeler . . . I pretty much agree with what you are saying, I hope he puts it together this season though.

We are all allowed to have our own OPINION, including you SC. I won't tell you to shut up yours and I won't shut up mine.

You say everyone who watched film knew he would struggle. I don't think the Steelers coaching staff felt that way or they wouldn't have started him and then benched him for poor performance.

I hope the kid becomes the next Lawrence Taylor. How great would that be for us. But I still have an opinion that he won't. Him telling me to shut up won't change it... you telling me to shut up won't change it... Only his play on the field will change my opinion.

This is a message board and only exists to serve up opinions. I will never get personal with it or cross the line. Further, I've never declared him to be a bust, only that I think he will be. And I made that prediction on draft day.

As far as I can tell, lots of people have written off Landry Jones, myself included. He has an even smaller work sample at a MUCH more complicated position. Where's the thread about people laying off him?
