Like Craig Wolfley says, " At least he doesn't look like he came from a two car pile up each time he gets tackled".... I agree, judicious usage should prolong his career.

My first observation is when he knows when a hit is coming, he seems to position himself to deflect a good amount of that inertia like good running backs do. And make no mistake about it, this kid is a running back.

was just comparing his run to some Rainey runs - Rainey went headlong into every play

Archer's run very much popped out to me as having fantastic visions and awareness

Even though Archer got a few RB snaps at he end of the half that looked promising, keep in mind, it was against 2nd and 3rd teamers. We need to see it against the Varsity. Personally, I think he got the tools and gumption, but just how many hits that body going to take before it brakes down remains to be seen,
People have been saying that about Desean Jackson, who is two inches taller and weighs the same as Archer, for years.

This.

He looked like a cagey veteran weaving through traffic.

Agreed. Though it's not being discussed I have noticed that Archer has dropped too many in camp and fumbled. His hands and ball security could limit how much we use him.

No preseason game can show anyone is ready for the NFL. Here is an article from last year proclaiming that Rainey and Barron Batch were "young stars". Rainey had a better pre-season game than Archer with 2 catches for 65 yards.

True, there is a lot of fluff pieces written in the preseason.

Two counterpoints:

1. Rainey & Batch did their damage in the third quarter, against scrubs who never played a real down in the NFL. Archer did his damage on the opening drive (against starters).

2. Stats... eh. I thinks people are looking more at Archer's style. His cutbacks are insane, and as VaDave pointed out, he doesn't run into defenders (like Rainey did); Archer either avoids the tackle or goes down**.

**Marcus Allen was the master of this. I once heard him say something alone the lines of: "Why run into a wall & risk injury, for one extra yard?... when I can save that energy for the next play, and get ten extra yards." Allen was healthy for a long, long time.

Big difference though, Rainey has shown many times that he is a massive penis.

I'll tell you what he must practice different than he plays because he didn't seem to have to "dropsies" on that 46 yard catch and run play. I really hate training camp sometimes, I truly believe you can't honestly judge a player when they are going against the same personnel everyday. I feel that you only catch a glimpse of strengths and weaknesses not the same feeling you get come game time against other teams, you know when someone else has to devise a game plan for you all week, JMO though!!!!
