Default Did the Eagles game expose a flaw in our defense?

Pre-season or not, I think it did.

Here me out. LeBeau likes to play his corners off a bit, and keep a safety or two back to prevent the big play. Personally I like the corners up 1-2 yards closer to the line of scrimmage, but I understand with Ike's decline, and Allen's sometimes good, sometimes bad play, a larger cushion is necessary.

The Eagles quick hitting passing game often had several uncontested passes before our DB's or LB's could close and tackle on the receiver. Nick Foles is not that good, and Sanchez is awful. Yet they looked like Pro Bowl players at times. I think our defensive scheme, and lack of pass rush are the reasons why.

Will other teams take a look at this tape and attack the same way?

The "not that good" QB Foles threw 27 TDs to 2 Ints last year.

LeBeau will stick with his scheme until he leaves just like Tom Landry stuck with the Dallas Flex Defense after the 1978 Steelers, Joe Gibbs and Bill Walsh showed how to beat it

Steelers corners play off, but there safeties play more man to man coverage than any team in the league. There is give and take with the zone blitz defense. If it is flawed every defense in the league is flawed.

The eagles exposed themselves as having one of the best offenses in the league.

Not taking a shot at you

Just noting that for the last few years the complaints about the DBs giving the big cushions in coverage have been a common theme around here

No defense was more successful than the Steelers 4-3 of the 70s but Noll dumped it in 1982, just as he opened up the passing game after the late 70s rules changes despite winning 2 Lombardis with the running game

Few coaches are capable of ditching what worked in the past - instead it usually is the coach that gets ditched

How long has Dick been out DC? we've been exposed that long.

and it worked well enough to be a part of 3 SB's.

The biggest problem with the defense IMO is how far off the corners always play. The style is predicated on you having to methodically work your way down the field and eventually you will probably make a mistake.

The last couple of years they have given up big plays or big chunks at a time much more often than in the past.

The only time I can remember recently was about two or three seasons ago they came out man to man the entire game against the Patriots and really worked them. I remember I couldn't believe it!!! I'm not sure we have seen that type of philosophy since, and any elite quarterback just sits back and takes what the corners are giving them. Brady, Bree's, Manning, Rodgers etc... Have their way pretty easily more times than not with Lebeau's scheme and philosophy.
