Default Gerry Dulac breaks down Game 2 vs. Jaguars

Gerry Dulac breaks down Game 2 vs. Jaguars
Monday, September 18, 2006

Game plan

What the Steelers will do: The Steelers have had little success running against the Jaguars, so QB Ben Roethlisberger will have to throw a lot of short-to-medium passes to loosen the defensive front and attack the linebackers. Running back Willie Parker had 115 yards on 29 carries against the Dolphins, but his numbers were padded by a 32-yard run. He had 12 runs of 2 yards or fewer against the Dolphins, including four for 12 yards in losses. The Steelers will try to pressure QB Byron Leftwich and not give him time to throw, similar to what they did last week against Daunte Culpepper.

What the Jaguars will do: One of the best ways to keep the pressure off Leftwich is to use RB Fred Taylor, who has played well against the Steelers when healthy. Taylor is a good cutback runner and hurts the Steelers on stretch plays. He had 74 yards on 21 carries against the Cowboys and has rushed for 252 yards on 64 carries in his past three outings against the Steelers. The Jaguars have a number of injuries on their defensive line, including Pro Bowl DT Marcus Stroud (ankle), and LB Mike Peterson is playing on a sprained knee.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Keys to victory

To win, the Steelers must ...

1. Let Ben out of the pen. Roethlisberger can put stress on a weak linebacker unit by roaming out of the pocket and creating plays.

2. Not let Stroud be loud. C Jeff Hartings will need to help on big DTs, Marcus Stroud and John Henderson.

3. Sandwich Leftwich. The Jaguars QB does not move well but does a good job threading passes when he has time.

To win, the Jaguars must ...

1. Not look silly against Willie. Sooner or later, Parker always seems to break a long run off tackle, and Jaguars secondary has to be ready.

2. Get some Taylor-made runs. The Steelers are vulnerable to stretch plays because of their linebacker pursuit.

3. Bar Heath from the middle. Corners will try to negate WRs Hines Ward and Cedrick Wilson, creating space for TE Heath Miller down the seams.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Keep an eye on

Jaguars WR Matt Jones: He is the team's No. 1 pick last year and is beginning to find his niche as a replacement for retired Jimmy Smith, the team's all-time leading receiver. Jones is 6 feet 6 and teams with Reggie Williams (6-3) to give the Jaguars two receivers who can catch high passes from Leftwich. Jones, a former quarterback, had five catches for 71 yards against the Cowboys.

Intangibles

The Dolphins finished the 2005 regular season with six consecutive victories and are hoping to parlay that momentum to add to their 23-16-1 record in season openers. Coordinators Dom Capers and Mike Mularkey worked in the same capacity with the Steelers. In their past three season openers at home, the Steelers are 3-0, averaging 30.6 points.

I agree pretty much with Dulac's breakdown. I think the Steelers will be ready for Fred Taylor and not let him hurt them on the ground, forcing Leftwich to beat them through the air. They've got to keep the blitz coming so he is forced into hurrying his throws - a rattled Leftwich is as useless as teets on a bull. Though the Jax D is formidable, successfully running on them isn't unheard of. Julius Jones ran for 72 yards and a TD in Week 1 against them and I think Willie is a better all purpose RB than Jones, so I'm not counting out him breaking a big one at some point during the game. Cowher and Wiz are going to have to open up the passing game for Ben & Co. and maybe throw in a gadget play or two. This should be a very good game, but I don't foresee a blowout on either side.

He stated that Willie will have a hard time against the Jags D...I agree, but I have a feeling he is going to have at least 2 huge runs.

So what? That's what the Steelers do best. Even if the run isn't working, they stick to it and MAKE it work. 115 yards is 115 yards.

For the most part, I'm not a Dulac fan. He should stick to talking golf. Leave the football talk up to Bouchette.

not to sound scared, but im glad that marcus stroud is injured cause that boy is 6'-7'' and 300 and somethin pounds. he plugs up the middle like an elephant but is as quick as a DE. i think willie will have a pretty good game. he should have 80-100 yrds. the author of the passage said willie was padded by a 32 yd run....yeah of course that is why willie parker is called fast willie. he isnt known for breaking tackles and running up the gut.
