IF they're sure that Malkin will be here after this season...,

I'd almost rather see them look to someone already in house (Malone, probably). At the very least, I'd rather see them explore a short-term solution rather than give up something significant to get someone like Gomez who many would like to see grab from the Devils, (And I won't even discuss the fact that it's going to take a lot more than a marginal defenseman and a marginal prospect to get a player like Gomez. I understand they may have to move him, but LL isn't going to take pennies on the dollar like that. He'll find someone who has a prospect or two that fits their system and make a deal there.)

If you're going to bring someone in from the outside, it doesn't make any sense to me to get someone who would factor into the depth chart on the top two lines past this year. That's why I'd nix the Gomez idea. I'd rather spend the money on someone who can be had for a one-year, low-cost deal - someone like Greg Johnson or Yanic Perrault. I'll pass on Jason Allison (his injuries worry me) and I'm not sure about Hrdina. He had confidence issues back when Hlinka and Kehoe were coaching. I can't imagine he'd do too well under Therrien.
Well, there is a story where Sergei Gonchar has said that Malkin told him he was staying in Russia for one more year - I'll post the link here. So we know for sure that he will be here next season, and therefore we only need someone for this year only. There's no way they'll go after Gomez and his $5 million salary, so those who are hoping the Pens grab him are barking up the wrong tree, plus they really haven't been paying attention to the situation at hand. There isn't much left out there right now, but I personally would take a chance on Allison for a 1-year deal similar to what the Stars offered Eric Lindros. I've wanted Perreault from the beginning for his faceoff prowess alone, so I wouldn't be against that either. But more than likely, Malone will be moved to center and they'll probably keep Michel Ouellet on the right wing rather than bring in a Carter or Sykora, who to my surprise are still on the market. But one way or the other, we're screwed this season with Malkin staying over in Russia, thanks to the friggin Russian mob.

Here's the link to the Gonchar comments:

I'd take Hrdina back. Would be nice to see some old blood get a fresh start with one of his old teams.(reffering to 83's post with the FA's left on the market)

I'd like to take Dumont off of Buffalo's hands if we are willing to pay him $2.9 (at least that's what he was awarded). Should be interesting to see what Shero does.

I would not be opposed to bringing in Dumont, but not at $2.9 million primarily because of injury concerns he's had over the past couple of seasons. If he's willing to take around what Recchi's getting, then sign him up.

It appears the future of Evgeni Malkin has taken another bizarre twist.

According to Reuters, the Russian news agency Itar-Tass is reporting that Malkin has left his Russian club Metallurg Magnitogorsk during training camp in Finland.

Malkin, who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins second overall in 2004 behind Alexander Ovechkin, reportedly disappeared, taking his belongings and passport with him. Earlier this week, the Russian star reworked his two-year contract with Metallurg Magnitogorsk and agreed to a new one-year deal.

Malkin has made no secret of his wishes to play with the Penguins in the National Hockey League. But the Russian Ice Hockey Federation has yet to sign a transfer deal with the NHL and Malkin has found himself in the middle of the impasse.

The previous transfer agreement would have seen Metallurg Magnitogorsk receive just $200,000 in exchange for Malkin.

There has been no shortage of drama since Malkin decided to stay in Russia last season. J.P. Barry has confirmed to TSN that he and Pat Brisson have taken over the hockey management side of IMG, whom Malkin fired in June, and Malkin has left Don Meehan and returned to be represented by Barry and Brisson.

"His wish is to play in the NHL, and in Pittsburgh," Barry told the AP. "We will continue to talk to him about his future, and we will decide the best course for him at this time."

A premier offensive talent, Malkin led Magnitogork with 47 points in 46 games last season. The 6-foot-3 pivot was expected, along with phenom Sidney Crosby, to give the Penguins an elite one-two punch down the middle.
He pulled a Alexander Mogliny here to get out of Russia.

Penguins talking to two bidders
Thursday, September 07, 2006

By Shelly Anderson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

With Sam Fingold still trying to iron out details to reach a purchase agreement, the Penguins have contacted at least two other original bidders for the team, sources close to the sale process said yesterday.

The team also has changed its approach about slots money for a new arena, telling the bidders they should base their offers on the "Plan B" funding, rather than counting on getting $290 million from Isle of Capri should that gaming company get the city's slots casino license.

Jim Renacci, a Ringgold High School graduate and now Ohio mayor and businessman, and New York businessman Andrew Murstein, whose investment group includes Western Pennsylvania sports figures Mark Cuban and Dan Marino, apparently are back in the running to buy the Penguins.

It was unclear whether a fourth bidder, Hartford real estate developer Lawrence Gottesdiener, is still involved.

Fingold, a Toronto native and Hartford real estate developer, trumped the other three in late July when he signed a letter of intent to negotiate exclusively with the Penguins. His bid was about $175 million, but there are sticking points involving money and other business matters.

Fingold had talked with Kansas City about bringing a team to its new arena but said at the time he signed the letter of intent that his priority was to try to keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

Renacci, who owns an Arena Football team in Columbus, had the low bid of the four finalists, around $150 million. Murstein, president of Medallion Corp., was believed to be close to $170 million. Both have said they are determined to keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh, where the team's lease at aged Mellon Arena expires in June and there is no ironclad plan for a new venue.

"My commitment to keeping the team in Pittsburgh has never changed through the whole process, and I would not be interested in moving it," Renacci said yesterday in an e-mail interview. "I have always assumed that I would have to work with the current 'Plan B' process."

Murstein was not available for comment.

The Penguins formed a partnership with Isle of Capri, which has agreed to pay $290 million toward a new facility if it is awarded the city's slots license.

Local and state officials devised an alternate funding plan should Forest City/Harrah's or PITG Gaming get the slots license that calls for money up front and yearly payments from the Penguins, as well as yearly payments from the winning gaming company and the state.

Oy...you know, now I wish they would just get it over with, though I am glad things are stalling out with Fingold. If it does fall through, could it be possible for them to take Renacci's bid, even though it is the lowest, if he is putting up more cash up front?

I just got back a little while ago from the Rookie Skate held down at Mellon Arena. It was great watching the guys going through their drills and line formations - we have a lot of very good prospects out there. Noah Welch looked awesome, as did Jordan Stahl.

The highlight of the morning was watching Evegni Malkin live and in person. He is big, strong, fast and wow can he skate.....very smooth. He has very long legs and gets an extremely fast jump on the puck. His passes were very good and in summation, all I can say is - we Pens fans are in for a very exciting season! When he came out of the tunnel, we all cheered him and he smiled brightly. Whenever he would put the puck in the net, we gave him more accolades! He is going to bring so much to this hockey club!

Here's a picture from today's skate of our newest star!! Go suck an egg, Russia - he's OURS!
