Default Hines Ward "Misquoted"Again

Some posters may recall that Hines Ward disavowed remarks in a Sports Illustrated article earlier this year in which Hines indicated his relationship with Cowher was not particularly close.

In today's P-G, an article on the Steelers not wanting to fall further behind the Ravens and Bengals includes this statement:

Receiver Hines Ward denied a comment attributed to him in the recent Sports Illustrated that he was reported to have said the day before the Steelers played Cincinnati Sept. 24:

"You don't want to overemphasize one early game. But let's face it -- if you get two games behind two teams, you're probably not going to win the division and you're going to be fighting to make the playoffs."

Said Ward: "I didn't say that. It's too early. It's not a must-win situation."

I tend to believe this latest quote atrributed to Ward by SI is accurate, given that: 1) SI probably was going to be particularly careful about attributing anything to Ward after he ran away from statements in an article in SI earlier this year; and 2) that quote is an accurate assessment of the consequences of falling behind 2 teams in a 4 team division.

Hines Ward has been a great Steeler but I have diminished respect for athletes (or for that mattter anyone else) who make a statement to the media and then deny making the statement if it places them in a difficult position.

It's hard to tell from just the little bit of info given if Ward said what he was quoted as saying in SI. In line with another thread, I just don't give the sports media - or any media outlet for that matter - the benefit of the doubt anymore because journalism isn't about reporting truths or facts any longer - it all comes down to what will best sell their tribunals. They tend to play to whatever audience they feel they can stroke with their stories and have been known to twist what was actually said for their own selfish purposes.

I have a hard time believing that Ward would actually say something of that magnitude this early in the season. While it certainly is possible, I just don't see it as being probable.

I agree! I believe, IMHO, that the media takes certain words twist them around, add more words that were never uttered or were taken out of an entire dialogue just to make a story more interesting.

The MEDIA stinks!

Blaming the messenger and media bashing is great fun, but what possible incentive/motive would SI have to make up that quote?

We are dealing with the NFL here, not something that could impact a presidential election or peace in the Middle East.

Since no one can say for sure what was really said, I prefer to believe that Hines would have more common sense and team spirit than to make such a blanket statement that could have a negative impact on morale.

I think its a fair statement.

If you get two games behind you probably aren't going to win the division - the gap is currently 2.5 games.

I can see why he might want to reverse out of the statement afterwards having lost the game, but I honestly dont think that him saying it will hurt morale.

What hurts morale is getting shut out by the Jags and losing to the Bengals at home.

Very simply, Dan - to sell more magazines. Hines is a well-known, much respected and the MVP of last year's SB Champs who are, as we all know, struggling a bit at the start of this season. The SB Champs, no matter who they are, are always hated by opposing teams' fans, particularly those in their own division and those who suffered the agony of defeat along the road to the SB. To read even a small tidbit of negativity from a member of a current SB Champion team puts the twinkle in their eyes and a woody in their boxers. Other than the fans of the Champs - most everyone else hates the reigning kings of the NFL (and other sports, as well), regardless of who they are. No matter what type of media source you come across these days, whether it be tribunals, television, radio, satellite - whatever - negativity sells!

I think words can have quite an effect on morale...especially coming from last years MVP.

Sure they can.

If they were words that described the Pittsburgh situation as 'hopeless' or 'crazy' then I would agree.

Also, attacking members of your own team can hugely affect morale.

However, what Hines said doesnt come close.

I just think what Ward said was routine common sense and a generalisation that can be applied to every team in the league - I think even BB would admit its probably you wont win the division if you fall behind two games...and he never gives anything away.

Since we don't ACTUALLY know if he said it, it's a mute point. At this point in the season, I prefer to remain positive.
